Robertson/Morehead Scholars

Do you need to be a state resident to apply to these prestigious programs?

dwincho: You can't apply for the Robertson (though you can submit a supplement at the time of your application). Your application to UNC or Duke will be enough, though. The Robertson nominees are culled from the admission applications at both schools. You do not have to be a state resident. Usually, about 15-18 Scholars are named at UNC, and an equal number at Duke.

The Morehead names an equal number (more or less), specifically from NC, and also from out of state. This year, I think about 53 were named total, but I don't know the breakdown. But you have to first be nominated by your high school. While any school in NC can nominate (and the number of nominations from each school depends on the size of the school), the ones from out of state are from specific high schools. The Morehead sometimes nominates students from the admissions application pool, but I don't know how often they do that.

Hope that helps. If you go into the UNC site, you can find the Robertson home page and the Morehead home page, both of which will be more specific.

Two kids in my AP stats class got the morehead, what are the statistical odds of that?
