If anybody could help, I have a few questions regarding the Robertson Scholarship.

First, can the recommendations used for the Robertson supplement be the exact same ones submitted to Duke through the Common App?
Do the Academic and Mentor Recommenders have to be different people?
Finally, could I use a debate teacher as an Academic Recommender?

Hi- I believe that they are going to request your college applications from the school. The point for you is to give them as much information about you as possible. If you have written about one of your activities on you college essays- then write about another or another angle of yourself. The hardest part of the application process in general is being able to “show” who you are with a limited amount of information. The Robertson is great because they have the Duke, UNC and Robertson Application available to get to know you. So take your time as you answer the questions. Everything to gain and nothing to lose!

You should send in letters from the people who you believe will best be able to write on your behalf - if there’s overlap between the Robertson and Duke/UNC applications, I think that’s ok. (2by2 makes a fair point, though, that you’d be missing out on a chance to show more sides of yourself and provide additional information supporting your application.)

But I think it would be best for the academic and mentor recommendations to be written by different people.

Your mentor letter should be written someone who can directly comment on your “leadership, innovation, and collaboration” as well as your “character, motivation, and sense of community” (from robertsonscholars.org).

Your academic letter should be written by a teacher who can comment on your intellectual curiosity and academic excellence. If you think that your debate teacher is that person, then you could use him or her, but I think someone reading your application might wonder why you didn’t ask someone from a core academic subject. Perhaps your debate teacher might be better as your mentor rec.

They say “What is most important is that the letters address what we’re looking for in the letter prompts.”, so I would say that if you have a recommender who’s already written you a recommendation for UNC of Duke but would, you feel, be the best person to write you a Robertson recommendation, then there’s no harm in having that person write you a Robertson recommendation also.
