I was invited to visit UNC today and I did, but while I was there I picked up some information on the Robertson Scholarship. I went to the website, and looked for moe information on it, but didn't really find all that much. so my question is, what are the requirements (other than being accepted to both UNC and Duke)? Also, what exactly does the program consist of?

Edit: I forgot to ask also, I know its a leadership based scholarship, so would creating and leading a musical ensemble that plays in coffee shops and bookstores to raise money for clean water in Africa significantly help my chances of getting the award?

You only have to be accepted to one school, not both. The Robertson gives full tuition, room and board, and mandatory fees to whichever school you are chosen through. You can be chosen through UNC, Duke, or both, and you can apply to both schools and just be chosen by one (they are separate committees). They also give you a laptop, funding for up to two semesters of study abroad, and funding for three summer activities.

There have been many other threads about the Robertson that you may want to look at, but more importantly the website has all of this information. Perhaps you were looking at the UNC website and not the official website? Either way, good luck :)

Really? Awsome, I guess it would be nice to do it through both schools, but thanks very much for all the information and the site.

Edit: One final question, I’ve been planning on trying to graduate early (at least 1 year, but 2 would be nice). I have tons of college credit, but would it be possible to try to work the summer programs around this, for instance pushing everything up a year and doing the first part before freshman year?

Not sure about that. More importantly, why would you want to? I a lot of the current/past Robertson have come in with past college credit but they manage to fill out all four years because they’re enjoying their time in college (plus it’s a free ride, so it’s not like they’re losing anything). You would have to ask them though (you can email them from the website).

In the long run, one or two extra years to enjoy yourself (and take classes that you want to take during that time) won’t make much of a difference, though I understand where you’re coming from. You should definitely ask them, but remember that what you want now and what you want in a few years can definitely change.

Okay, well definitely do the supplement for the Robertson and you can apply to both UNC and Duke. They will tell you if you are a semifinalist and finalist for either or both. I have a friend who is a finalist right now for both and you do not need to choose until after they pick you.

Also, I am not sure if you can graduate early with this scholarship. Their mission is to change you into a great leader and when they plan on giving you a full ride, i would think they would want you to stay. It is not going to kill you to stay and enjoy yourself like many before me have said. In addition, a couple of phds. This is pretty intense and I have never really heard of that. I know one takes years and years of research. If you plan on getting a couple, good luck with that.

I would recommend against graduating early. The opportunities you’ll receive as a Robertson scholar will more than offset the one or two years of pay you lose, and the program is such an enriching experience that you’ll want to stay the full four years.

I also want to suggest that getting TWO PhDs may not be so beneficial…you’re probably much better off looking at something like an MBA.

To Harambee - I know, yes it was Carolina 101.

To Whiteandnerdy - ok that sounds good. Thanks for all of your advice.

To Enka99 - how many students do they select?

To Sporclastic - I want to go into research in string theory and work for the government (probably not at the same time in my life). I don’t really want to go into business.

No, I believe (and do not quote me on this) that many fill out the supplemental form for the Robertson and then admissions also pulls applicants to the school and puts them with the Robertson scholarship applications. Then from there they pick about 150 semi-finalists for phone interviews. Then they pick about 80 to go down to the schools for Finalist Weekend for more interviews and things. Then they go on and pick their 36.

That sounds a right. I remember that they were talking about pulling out of the applicants, but that it would be really beneficial to complete the supplemental material part for it.
