Hi there,
I have qualified for World robotics for two different years in high school. However now I feel instead of competing that I switch to coaching teams and being an assistant and judge in competitions etc. Do you think this will be looked unfavorably from a college perspective that I stopped competing and instead changed to coaching? I also want to work this summer in camps assisting with robotics. I would love to hear if anyone did something similar or any other insights appreciated.
Unless your team placed and you’re one of the leads, probably not. Is it First or Vex? What was your position on the team? First teams are pretty big, so I feel it’s easy to get lost in the shuffle. Vex teams are much smaller, so it may be “easier” to make a bigger impact, but IMO, outside of the highly ranked teams it’s much like any other EC. Great EC for STEM majors, a lot of fun, and you get to practice your skills. D20 did slow competition efforts to focus on leadership and coaching roles her junior and senior years. She still competed, but moved into the President position and focused more on trouble shooting than true build. She was applying MechE; I think the expanded experience helped her with Honors College admissions and UG Research and intern positions. I’d say follow your passion, and that will show through in your apps.
