How's the robotics or VLSI at Caltech? I can't seem to find very much of it on their website, does it exist?

There’s not a lot of robotics. [Welcome to Robotics! - Robotics Wiki/url and Murray are doing some stuff.

As for VLSI, Ali Hajimiri is one of the best in the world. [url=http://www.chic.caltech.edu/]Hajimiri Group](Robotics - Robotics) Of course, that’s only sort of VLSI, but that’s because plain old VLSI is boring… if all you want to do is figure out how to make thinner gate oxides, go become a materials scientist.

Now, the real action is with these guys: Tai, Scherer, Painter, Roukes and Vahala. Yeah, nanofab! (Hajimiri is really awesome too though)

My impression is that Burdick and Murray are doing some decent work in robotics.

Digital VLSI is essentially nonexistent.
