Rochester Early Medical Scholars 2013

So when do we find out about REMS?

I would think soon, since people from previous years had started discussing their results around this time. If they’re carrying on the tradition, the notification should come in the mailbox. I hope a URochester representative can shed some light on this because I’m also anxiously awaiting my results.

Rochester Early Medical Scholars finalist letters are scheduled to be mailed during the first week of March. No REMS decisions will be released before March 1st. Don’t start checking your mailbox yet! (Due to scheduling conflicts, we had to push our “REMS weekend” back to a later date this year.)

I agree with chewydog. I heard that they notify finalist for the REMS program around the beginning of february, and interviews are in late february/march

Toystory…TSocash works in admissions at Rochester.

@TSocash when will the interview invitation and rejection letters be sent? Will we still recieve a letter even if our midyear report hasn’t been sent yet because my first semester report card hasn’t come out yet.

We are going to attempt to mail out the finalist invitations to approximately 50 students during the first week of March. I am under the impression that non-finalist letters will go out within a similar time frame. I am more than happy to give an update if this changes.

The Mid-Year Reports are not necessary for our REMS review, but they are required eventually for standard admission. Please ask your school counselor to send one our way whenever it becomes available.

REMS non-finalists can expect their University of Rochester Regular Decision letter to arrive by April 1st along with all other Regular Decision applicants. Please remember that our Rochester Early Medical Scholars pool is highly selective. Non-finalists will still be considered for standard admission into the University of Rochester.

Best of luck to everyone!

@TSocash: Could you pl. tell how many students you expect to select out of 50 interviewed? thanks.

Also, could do you know how many approx applied?

Approximately 600 students applied to the Rochester Early Medical Scholars program. The Medical School will eventually look to enroll 10-15 of these amazing applicants.

It is important to remember that the vast majority of students who enter medical school do not enter through a combined-admission program such as REMS.

TSocash - Fingers still crossed that I will be offered the opportunity to interview, but do you happen to know specifically when interviews will be held? Also, are interviewees hosted by the school during the “REMS Weekend?”

Thanks!

March 21st-23rd.

Yes, all interviewees will be hosted by current REMS students.

May the odds be ever in your favor!

@TSocash:

March 21-23 is the same weekend as the interviews for the Case Western BA/MD program, which I am sure quite a few of those interested in Rochester’s REMS program will be attending. If students receive interviews for the REMS program, will there be any other possibility for other dates to interview for the program? Alternatively, would the dates for the REMS weekend be changeable, or would you be able to coordinate something with Case Western?

With so many BA/MD programs out there, it was probably inevitable that we would overlap with someone. (This wasn’t our intention.)

There will be no alternative dates for interviews at this time, and the dates for the 2013 REMS finalist weekend are solidified. It will be up to the applicant to make special arrangements if necessary.

Best of luck throughout the selection process! REMS finalists will be notified in early March.

Thanks TSocash for the information! Just out of curiosity, is it possible to come for part of the weekend? I ask because of the Case Western conflict. While I may not be invited for REMS interviews, I think it would be beneficial for others to know their options as well because I’m sure that at least one invitee will be in this situation.

We have made special accommodations for finalists in the past, but all exceptions will have to be approved the REMS coordinator (and not all requests can be granted). I suggest to wait and see. We’ll cross that bridge if we come to it.

Hopefully, the Rochester admissions office will be understanding. Spring vacation begins for many students in the NY area on March 23. Families may have travel plans beginning on March 23.

@TSocash Are our applications for undergrad (not the program) considered under the early notification or regular decision? when we should hear about undergrad if we applied to the program?

Good questions.

Students had to choose between one or the other, REMS or Priority Review. If you applied to the REMS program, your application was automatically coded as “Regular Decision”. We guarantee that all Regular Decision letters will be received by April 1st.

TSocash, this isn’t about REMS but since you’re following this thread: have all the priority review decisions gone out? I know some of them were sent the 15th, some the 18th, is there still a chunk waiting to be sent?
