Anyone have any news re: Rochester Renaissance Scholarship????????Supermom--did your D already have her interview? I assume results won't be made known until late March, early April??

D just got a Fed-Exed letter telling her she's a Renaissance finalist.

She'll be flying out for the interview. Renaissance Weekend is March 27-28th.

Hope the weather warms up by then.

big congrats! and best of luck because it is super-competitive. only 10 get it!

I was just there this past weekend. it was super-cold, single digits, snow storm---but that's the way I like it.

I know that a lot of ppl get 10K. are there any in-between scholarship (10K<rennaissance)?

Congrats WayOutWestMom!

My son was a finalist 2 years ago. He did not win the Renaissance but was awarded a half-tuition scholarship. He chose to enroll at a different school. Good luck to you, JohnC and the rest!

hey! So yeah, I got my letter fedex-ed on march 4th and I am a finalist for the scholarship! Everything on the itinerary was pretty clear but the one ambiguous element to the whole thing is the actual interview for the scholarship... Is the interview like a traditional college interview? Is it way more formal? What kinds of qudtions do they ask? Will I be expected to talk about current world affairs and such, or is it like a college interview in the sense that they just want to learn more about me? If anyone could clear this up for me, it would be so helpful and I would be less nervous before my interview at the campus on the 28th!!! Thanks and peace out!!!

My sense is that it's like the more traditional college interview. The committee is trying to judge how well you will fit in at Rochester and what you can contribute to the school. (Or so D's college guidance counselor told her.)

And try to relax!

i'm guessing you're interviewing with admissions people or professors
the admission people are really nice and personable
the professors vary, but are generally also very nice people

Thank you, do you think it would be appropriate for me to email them and ask? Or would they like flip out or something?

It's perfectly fine to e-mail and ask. They are generally very helpful and kind people; you won't be the first to have asked, and they won't flip out. You may not get much useful, but that's another issue entirely.

I am trying to remember what my son told me about it. I think there were 3 people on the panel. One might have been a student. The interview lasted for about 1/2 an hour. He said that they didn't ask him anything that really surprised him. He did have some supplemental material that he took with him concerning a presentation he had done at a national conference. However, he never showed it to them (!!) He said it never came up and he didn't feel comfortable giving it to them. Silly kid...

Has anyone who was a finalist and attended the March 27-28 Renaissance Scholarship event heard anything yet?

D got her letter today. She didn't get one of the Renaissance, but she did get a Genesee scholarship--1/2 tuition guaranteed for 4 years.

This may just have pushed Rochester to the top of her list.

I got the Renaissance, I'm definitely going. This was a major factor. Definitely she should go to U of R!

Brazen Raisin - congrats on getting the Renaissance! That is terrific. Just out of curiosity, if you are willing to share, what do you think stood out about you that helped you to win the scholarship?

Congrats, Brazen Raisin, and WayOutWestMom's D - 1/2 tuition is nothing to sneeze at!

Thank you Chedva!

D decided today--she's going to attend UR. I'll be mailing in her deposit this week.

I suspect that by the time I am done outfitting her for the Rochester winter there may be no goose left unplucked in all of North America....

I got the Renaissance, and I will also be going to the U of R next year! :)

I hear you WayoutwestMom!! We live in FL and S likes UR/Eastman, but is still struggling with his decision because of the weather! We are so spoiled.

I'm not quite sure what it was that got me the scholarship, shennie. When we went for the finalist weekend, they read off little introductions about all of us, and mine really did NOT seem impressive next to the other kids that were there. It almost seemed like everyone there had started some charity to feed hungry children, or worked 80 hours a week to help support their family, or came from a country with some turbulent story to tell.

This may seem discouraging, but don't despair, because somehow or other I managed to get it, and I certainly haven't done any of those things. I think it has a lot to do with being relaxed and honest at the interview. I also sent out little thankyou letters to each of my 3 interviewers--really short, just to be polite. Idk if that made a big difference or not, but it couldn't have hurt.

Thanks for the comments Brazen. I am not in the desparing mode. I am a parent and my kids are all done with the process. But I thought your comments might be helpful for others who are selected in the future.

Pom Bomber - congrats on your scholarship as well. Would you feel comfortable adding to the discussion? Was there something on your application that made you stand out, do you think, a reason you got the scholarship?
