RIT any good for photography? Any better schools at a more reasonable cost?

Any good for photography? Is the pope Catholic?

I understand that RIT is one of the best. Daughter wants to go there
without a doubt, it is just a money issue. It would be nice if some NY, NJ,
MD, PA state schools were nearly as good in quality simply for the $ issue.

RIT and RISD are two of the best schools for anything photographic. RIT even has a world reknown printing program. Other top schools are School of Art Institute in Chicago and , believe it or not, University of New Mexico.

Florida State perhaps? I really don't know much about it honestly except that Jerry Uelsmann taught there, and he is well known. The tuition for out of staters is about $15,000. Bard College in NY might be a good option as well, Larry Fink teaches there, but the tuition is $31,000. At $22,000, RIT isn't bad at all comparatively...and if with an RIT pedigree, you will have professional level skills...so...the investment may be worth it.

Yes, RIT is a steal for a private school , and they do give out plenty of both merit and need based aid. Taken together, RIT is a real deal.

I should add I attended RIT...a cold cold place. Brrrrrrrr, but was very happy with the education.

My d will be starting RIT in a few weeks. They offered her merit $ and financial aid and it will cost less than attending TCNJ or Rutgers. RIT does NOT cover 100% need like some schools, but we weren't looking for miracles. Although she's a graphic design major, she will be taking quite a few photography classes. Her roommate is a photo major from the west coast. I'll try to give an update after the 1st qtr.

Jerzgrlmom, If I can ask a personal question, How much Merit aid was given your daughter by RIT?

taxguy, she was given the Achievement Scholarship (or something like that) from the School of Design. That's worth $5000. She also received a rather large RIT grant. The Achievement Award continues for 4 yrs if she maintains a certain GPA (can't remember what it is) but the grant may decrease (I'm a pessimist).

Since your d is also interested in Syracuse, my d was offered more scholarship $ from them (forget the name but I think it was $12,000 or maybe $8,000). She received a better FA package too but SU costs more to begin with.

Jerzgrlmom, thanks for the info. At least I have an idea what to ask for.
