Rochester-- the inside scoop

Funny how you guys mentioned optics two days before that article about UR discovering something important about optics was released. You should check out the UR website cause it appears some UR students found some breakthrough techonlogy in optics.

(Rochester is actually about 340 miles away from NYC)

Yeah, Rochester is no where near NYC, you wouldn't ever go there, it is probably a good 7+ hour drive

I went this summer to visit U of R and then I swung to NYC to visit NYU and Columbia and to see some family. I took Amtrek out of Sandusky Ohio, and got to U of R around 7 hours of riding. Then it took about 7 to get to NYC. However, Amtrek is goign out of business and they had to stop all teh time for the track to clear or for the track to be repaired. so overall, the trip should be much shorter if you drive or take the bus.

Amtrak is not going out of business... I just looked around and saw nothing... This past year they had record number of passengers.
Its a government business and those are pretty stable...

I just know that about 2 stations closed around the ohio area by me because of they weren't doing enough business. this was about 3 years ago .

There must have been something you didn't like; nothing is perfect.
So what was it?

Did you find the area around the campus pleasant? I've heard it's average. And, do you think that paying full freight for Rochester is worth it? I wouldn't be, but I'm curious to see what you think.

I would definitely be willing to pay full price for a train ticket to Rochester-- I'd even be willing to pay for a plane ticket if it comes to that. And I found the campus itself to be especially nice, most definitely the people. The area immediately outside of the campus (the campus itself is very secluded) was relatively nice, though still a semi-city atmosphere. However, the proximity of the city and Eastman would allow you to view many cultural events, so there is a benefit to the area, which holds the George Eastman house (with a naitional phot exhibit) and a lot of other visual and performance art-related events.

Oh, did I mention that I love the University of Rochester?! :)

Haha, I think you misinterpreted my question.

I actually meant would you be willing to pay full total for the school.

I'm glad you love it though! There's a possibility I might too. =)

Well, I don't qualify for any financial aid (fortunately my father is a doctor, so I was incredibly fortunate and did not have to factor that into the schools I chose to look at). But I did get a $6,000 per year merit scholarship for my interest in photography, which I showed by bringing a portfolio along with me on my interview.

Given the option, I would be willing to work during college to pay for Rochester, and still hope to work during college as is, though not for tuition.

I say this because I feel for me, Rochester was an almost perfect fit. The people make the school stand out, along with the great academics and art programs (Eastman). If not for the people I would probably not have chosen the school... They all seem to mesh well together, despite the fact that the school is incredibly socioeconomically, ethnically and racially diverse.

Do all you can to visit if this is possible for you... I think visiting the schools will give you a better idea of which school is right for you :)

Well, I've narrowed my list down to four choices, and Rochester is the only one that I haven't been to. I already have at least $10,000/year from them, but honestly, I'm hoping for more. Though my parents are doctors, they're not willing to pay that much, so to attend Rochester I'd need at least another 10,000 more. That's a longshot, indeed.

You seem to have a really great impression of the people there, and that's certainly very important to me. If I get an uber-big scholarship, I'll probably take a visit up there, and who knows? Maybe I'll join you next year. Thanks for all your help!

robotab- rochester has merit scholarships for art? o_O! i'm currently taking AP art 2D design, but didn't send them a portfolio. >.< is it too late to send one? i'm trying to get as much merit aid as i can. =/ my parents' can't afford the tuition and i don't want to end up taking huge loans.

The scholarship that I received for my art was a deans scholarship, which is for anyone who will provide a unique contribution to the URochester community. On the bottom of the letter was a not from my admissions counselor, which sadi that he enjoyed seeing my art in our harrisburg interview. I don't think you can qualify for any merit aid unless all of your paperwork was in by december 1st. If it was, then you may still be able to send them a portfolio or bring one along if you interview off-campus.

the not that i speak of was a *note
and sadi should be *said while I'm fixing up the previous post :)

I'm hoping that I can bump this back into the threads for Rochester, since people will most likely find my previous post helpful...
