Rock: Eng > U.S

I'm not saying American bands suck, but in any decent list of the Greatest Rock bands, the top is usually dominated by English bands - the Beatles, the Rolling Stones, Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd, the Who, etc.

Why has America failed to produce as many great rock bands?

Of course, I'm posting this on an American forum, so I'll probably get royally flamed for this, and everyone will hate me forever : ). At least we should get some (hopefully) interesting conversation

B/c it hadn’t moved to the US during the era you are referring to (60s, 70s). Rock has progressed and there have been a lot of popular rock bands from the United States. In 30 years, some of these bands will be today’s opinion of the Who, Led Zeppelin, etc…

Stereophonics is also an awesome UK band that we have never heard of in the states.

Because Brits are better, duh :p.

Don’t worry, Gerontius, we won’t hate you forever:) (just for a while).

^^^You mean when I’m my parents age, kids will be listening to Linkin Park and Lady Gaga? I find life no longer worth living :(

People here are too polite. Isn’t someone going to verbally abuse me for insulting the pride of America?

“it hadn’t moved to the US during the era you are referring to (60s, 70s).”

Uh, excuse me?

Right after the British Invasion, bands like The Beach Boys and others were imitating English bands. Even more so in the 70s. American rock bands influenced by British ones did not take more than a few years to gain a respectful name.

Also, the TC fails to recognize that US rock and roll influenced the bands he talks about. Elvis, Chuck Berry, and more were the reason those bands existed.

Also, after the 80s, most famous rock bands were American, so the argument is more flawed there.

Still prefer British rock though.

Don’t put LP and Lady Gaga in the same category as the Beatles, stones, etc. That’s blasphemy!

Well while we’re talking about only “Rock”, I’d only put Alternative and Rock bands in there. I think the Who/Led Zeppelin’s of today will be bands like The Killers or Nickelback (ewww, so bad, but they are popular and you can’t disagree with that).

To be quite frank, it’s probably too early to tell how music will trend. We’ve only really had a solid 60 years of “popular music” as we know it today. It’s obvious that 60s/70s music has stood the test of time. That’s one instance. Will today’s music continue the “trend”?

^^^Elvis and Chuck Berry were rock artists? I never said that there were no great American bands. I just said that they were heavily outnumbered by British ones.
^^I’m just hoping that the next generation doesn’t do that
^LP are supposed to be rock.

Damn you, you non-nationalistic CCers. Don’t you have any pride in your country? Will you let foreigners insult you?
Thread is FAIL :(

Erm… I like Adam Lambert :). He’s Amerrehcun!

But no seriously, the Britis have all around better music. It just happens. (My mum’s British so I’m a bit biased in this).

NIRVANA is the best American band ever. I love Kurt Cobain.

As a person that listens mostly to classic punk, UK is superior
