Hey I was wondering if when applying to transfer to UC's if your ethnicity and background play a large role in their decisions, or the fact that you come from a high income or low income family. Just wondering what you guys think on the topic?

Officially race and income do not play roles in admission, since Affirmative Action was outlawed in the UC system.

However, if you are a URM or a First Generation or a Low income student and meet the admission requirements with a 2.8+ GPA…you will most likely be admitted…I’ll go and say if you meet the requirements with a 2.4+…why 2.4 because that is the minimum GPA they ask for… 2.8 is considered “competitive” and you are guaranteed admission at some campuses with a 3.0 GPA.

My opinion is that they are looking for students from diverse backgrounds to recruit into their schools because diversity in the UC system is so rare. They will give you an opportunity if you meet the requirements…and lets face it having a low-income student means more federal dollars…blah blah blah.

PM me if you have any questions.

Yes.

10 char

This bodes well for me.
haha. my gpa is competitive anyway.

they weigh too much imo

and its still racism, but its racism towards what THEY want, they want to be social engineers

I guess being Hispanic is good for something. :). I’m referring to myself BTW.

but do you guys think that it can be a deal breaker like if someones gpa is subpar?

i find it hard to believe that they’d automatically accept someone with a 3.0 simply for being a minority or low income student like Janesays says.

It’s really unfair…both to non-minority students who do not get accepted for having the same gpa, and for the minority student who gets in despite their low gpa. If you have a 2.4 at a CCC, do you really stand a chance at a UC? Doesn’t seem likely.

i did not say that they’d automatically accept someone with a 3.0 simply for being a minority or low income student lucyc66, i said:

that is not just for URMs, First generation or low income students…that is for every eligible person under the TAG agreement.

Transfer Admission Guarantee…available to qualified students from select CCC’s to select UC campuses.

what i did say regarding URM, First Gen and Low Income students is that they are most likely to get admitted with a low GPA if they meet the requirements. is it fair?

the system is not fair…not just the UC system…but the system.

The UC schools realize that social mobility is not equal among all races. It may put me, a white student at a disadvantage, but it IS more fair than not, considering the history of ethnic clashes in this country.

^^^ what dark said. If race or ethnicity gives you an edge it’s comparable to the edge you get for landing a really great internship or community service hours or something. Things which are easier for wealthier people to attain, by the way, because people who have to work for a living can’t afford to work for free.

Wow Sophee well put
