Rolling admission

I applied to vcu and GMU and I’ve received an acceptance from GMU since I applied early action. Scores are 3.9469 GPA. Around 3.7 uw. Sat 1720. Total volunteer hours 160 ish. 4 AP 5 advanced not counting senior year. Top 20% of class out of 290. Lots of honor society memberships and leader in 4 clubs. Will I get into vcu? What is rolling admission? My friend has already been notified of her acceptance. I applied before the scholarship deadline of dec 1. Did I get wait listed or something?? Didn’t try that hard in hs but grades aren’t that bad to get me wait listed or denied are they?? Somebody pls help me clear things up in my head and with my parents. Vcu is top choice.

Rolling means that they will not wait until a deadline to collect all applications before they give you an answer. No one can say if you will get in for sure. You are not waitlisted unless they notified you. They may give answers in a different order for reasons that have nothing to do with you or your friend. You will just have to wait, it is still very early if you just submitted before Dec 1.

Typical rolling admission college sends out decisions as completed applications are received, with a “completed” application being one that has everything required including transcript and test scores in it. The time between receipt of that completed application and notice of decision is often about 3 or possibly 4 weeks.

Though there are probably some “pure” rolling admissions colleges that religiously make all decisions on that rolling basis, most are not pure. Many do not start sending any decisions until December so if you apply in September, you will still have to wait over two months. A particular department in the university may take longer to make decisons so major you apply for can have an impact. Moreover, a particular college in the university, such as engineering, may sit on majority of applications until closer to the app deadline date so it can tell what the total application pool will be before making many of the decisions. If there is a delay, all you can do is sit and wait. A waitlist is something that applies to students not admitted during regular admission but are told they may get admitted in May after the college sees how many actually accept admission. A delay in getting a decision during rolling admission is not a waitlist.
