D heard today! OOS NY Applied 9/30, accepted 10/11
Congratulations @wifemomteacher! Do you mind sharing her stats?
Daughter heard 10/10, though letter was dated 10/8, applied 9/10
OOS - NJ
Business
GPA 4.2/4.0
SAT 1290
S20 (#2) Accepted 26 ACT 3.65 (uw) GPA OOS - PA
Son just applied to MSU last night…here are his stats:
3.47 GPA
1200 SAT
He wants to study Accounting…what are his chances?
My son got his acceptance this morning. Applied 10/4. 1330 SAT 3.96 UW, 4,71 W. IB & AP. In-state. Based on what I noticed 2 years ago with my other son and many at his school, MSU seems to quickly accept applicants near or above the “75th percentile” of their prior year’s admitted students range, in terms of stats. Numbers for 2019 are not posted but 2018 is as follows:
Fall 2018 Freshman Profile*
Entering class: 8,395
High school GPA: 3.5-3.9
Composite ACT: 23-29
Total SAT: 1,130-1,300
- middle 50 percent of enrolled freshmen
For those students, it seems to take just over a week. Later LOTS of other great applicants in the mid range with 1200 SAT’s & A’s & B’s will get in; they just won’t find out right away. In terms of GPA above, I was told at a visit that they do not use the high school’s weighted GPA but instead re-calculate their own. No additional points for honors but they do give “extra points” for IB & AP. They were not clear on how many points or how to actually calculate the MSU version of a GPA. So the middle 50% range shown above should be the recalculated MSU version, not one from a transcript. Just my two cents on what seems to be a trend, especially for In-State.
Thanks for that explanation @MomofBoys14 . Question: if they take at or above the 75th percentile, how does that translate into a 3.5-3.9 range for middle 50 percent of enrolled freshman. That (to me) reads like it would be 3.9+ for the 75th percentile if 3.5-3.9 is the middle 50 percent. (And no, I’m not at all good at math so forgive my slow brain on this one!!!)
D got in yesterday! We were pleasantly surprised to have heard so early! She applied 9/27 and was admitted 10/15. GPA3.99 (UW) SAT 1170, strong EC’s. OOS- VA. Very excited to be part of this! Good luck to everyone!!!
Yes, it seems that the over 75% range for GPA would be those above above a 3.9 with the RECALCULATED MSU gpa. So students under a 3.9 with their unweighted high school GPAs could actually have over a 3.9 as far as MSU is concerned if they have taken any AP or IB courses. I just don’t know exactly how they recalculate it since we were just told they get “extra points” for those classes. Again, this “over 75 percentile” theory is just MY theory and seems to be pretty consistent with IN-STATE applicants and the quick acceptances. My other son (2 years ago) had an unweighted 3.8 GPA but he had 2 AP’s and 3 IB (HL’s) and 3 IB (SL’s) and a 1340 SAT. He got in 10 days after applying just like this son.
Thanks for providing that context! Mine applied about 3 weeks ago and her portal is still saying awaiting review. She is not in the 75th percentile - 3.6 UW with 2 APs - but based on who they’ve admitted from her school in the past, she should safely get admitted, just not sure when. It’s so hard to wait!
Sure! @finalthree She has a 98% average, 1290 SAT, multiple APs and a lot of school activities, sports and community work
Applied 10/6, Accepted 10/15
OOS
30 ACT (32 superscore, although I’m not sure MSU looks at that)
3.86 GPA
Applied to the supply chain major
lots of AP/DE, sports, NHS, volunteer coaching, etc.
common app had a delay this year. daughter used common app for all the schools she applied to and all weren’t received (or downloaded by the colleges) until about a month after she applied using it. she applied as soon as it opened:-(
My daughter applied through Common App as well on Aug 1st. MSU shows they received it on the 7th. She applied to Lyman Briggs which to my knowledge admits students based on a first come first served basis, and only admits the 1st 600 or so. Her portal is still saying awaiting review. Maybe the residential colleges take longer to make a decision? I just hope that the delay from using Common App didn’t set her back.
@Jennrn622 I don’t think there is any rhyme or reason. A friend posted her daughter was accepted to Lyman Briggs on Oct 10, and she applied about 10 days prior. I know others who applied Aug 1 with great stats and still have they grey “awaiting review” box on their portal.
I have not heard there is a delay in common app - my daughter applied to 8 schools using common app and have heard back from three; just not MSU.
My son applied on 10/6 through the common app. He got his acceptance today. We are OOS in NJ, ACT 26…unweighted GPA 3.7…varsity football…a few other extra circulars, 2 APs, 2 honors (i believe)
@OneEyedWonder congrats to your son! We are anxiously waiting to hear. My daughter has similar stats so hopefully it will be soon.
My daughter got her acceptance yesterday. It took about 8 days. She has a 3.99 unweighted GPA, IB diploma program plus several AP and Honors classes. SAT 1460. She’s happy to have been accepted since this was the first school she has applied to.
I was just admitted to MSU
I have a 4.01 weighted gpa and got a 1250 on my SAT.
D submitted application via common app on 10/23. Will she be notified by MSU about portal account to check status?
