Rolling Admissions

Is UT Austin rolling admissions for auto admits? Why do some people hear back earlier and get their first choice major?
Is it disadvantageous to apply later than earlier because of this? I know UT isn’t officially labeled a rolling admission school but I feel like it is in a small way?

Any thoughts?

There is a recent blog about this at texadmissions.com. Basically, 95% of decisions come out in late Feb. It’s hard to explain the few that come out earlier - not a lot of rhyme or reason to it. It is NOT rolling admissions: it’s late Feb with a very small number of exceptions.

I better understand you question now. Notification of admit to the university for auto admits is what I thought you were asking me. Auto admits getting their majors comes in waves and is not rolling. The auto admits I know from last year, all received their decisions the 3rd Friday in February and same for the review applicants.

I see this question coming up a lot. I have a current Longhorn. Last year she was auto admit top 2.9% of her very large HS class, good ACT/SAT scores, etc. She applied Oct 14th last year, and she didn’t hear about her CNS major until January 21st. The wait was so LONG. This year I have a HS senior top 5.5% of her very large HS class, great ACT/SAT scores, etc. She applied 8/2 and was accepted to her engineering major yesterday. She is still waiting for engineering honors. Both took rigorous HS courses even in their senior years. A good amount of volunteer hours. I keep saying you can’t read anything into who is accepted and who waits. Depends on the competitiveness of those who apply each year. UT last year had acceptances in waves about once a month beginning in mid November.

I think @NotSoPatient daughter will either get in Engineering Honors or came very close to it. Most of the November notifications we know, ended up in Honors or at least got interviews for BHP, etc.

@gettingschooled Good to know, thanks!

@gettingschooled I’m talking about in the sense as they accept as they go–even though they won’t notify most till feb

They won’t notify till feb yeah, but I’m wondering if they read applications as they are receieved

We can only guess. I’d guess they give an AI/PAI as they read them (as received). If you send test scores after that, I’d guess you get a new AI. If someone else applies last minute with higher AI/PAI than you, you could be bumped down. That’s my guess.
