created a CC account so hopefully in couple of weeks I can post son’s result here, and hopefully good result. Good luck, everyone:)
When looking at the application tracker it says application complete and then says “update available!” which I hadn’t seen before. Is that new or does everyone’s say that because I don’t see any update.
@ILMomof2 my S20’s says that now, too. I thought maybe it was because he had updated admissions last week about something on his application, but I guess that must not be it!
When we clicked on it, it still had the same “All of your required… by January 31” message. I guess he’ll check Friday night or Saturday morning to see if anything else changes.
Is anyone not seeing “update available!” to the right of “application complete”?
Well, I sure wish I could check, but I don’t know DS’s login info. I’ll have to wait until he gets home from work tonight.
DS logged into his and it’s the same. Which probably means good news for you guys!
@cshell2 thanks for checking and reporting back. I hope all our kids get good news soon. I’ll post if anything else changes.
myrna97 and cshell2- what major did your kids apply for?
I called today and asked about it. They person who answered didn’t know but asked a coworker and said it just means something was updated on your application and not that a decision was made. She said decisions would start coming out in a few weeks.
My son applied for Aerospace Engineering although they don’t actually admit to the major so really just CSE.
@ILMomof2 that makes sense.
My S20 ended up applying for a fairly small major. Not as competitive as anything in CSE. (But still excellent and well-respected, and a really good fit IMO.)
My son also applied for CSE. He is not anxious like me though. He says he already knows he got into Iowa State so he doesn’t have to worry about anything. I guess that’s what moms are for ?
My son was also accepted at Iowa State and he really loves Duluth, so he never checks any of this stuff unless I bug him to. I think he just wants to get admitted to UMN just to say he got in. He’s not real thrilled about going to school in downtown Minneapolis, but we haven’t actually visited yet, so maybe he’ll change his mind.
I have DS’s login info now, so I can check whenever. He asked me what I needed it for since it’s saved on the computer at home and you don’t actually have to type it in. I asked him, “Well, what if the other parents tell me there’s a change and I’m at work?”
He looked at me like I was nuts and walked away.
@cshell2 My son didn’t want to visit Minnesota but I said we should, he said he liked it better then Iowa State. But visiting Iowa State was also my idea and he liked it. Lol
Well the update available is no longer on the portal so who knows what that was all about.
My son is small town, we live in the country and he likes open spaces and outdoorsy things. Crowds and cities stress him out. UMN is our closest option at only 2 hours away though and has everything he could possibly want academically. Duluth and ISU are both about 4 hours. His 4th choice is Huntsville, but they raised the bar on the 100% scholarship for OOS this year to a 34 ACT so now he only received a 67% scholarship which makes the 900 mile trip less appealing.
Oh my son applied to Huntsville too. I thought he qualified for the full scholarship. He took the SAT though so I’ll have to look and see if it effects him. We haven’t visited yet though. One of his classmates is visiting there and the Alabama in Tuscaloosa so we were going to see what he thought before deciding if we should visit. We are near Chicago so I think Minnesota and Iowa are similar distances but he did get scholarship money already from Iowa.
Ok. I just looked. It actually looks like they changed the GPA requirement for 100% scholarship. Right now my son meets the SAT but his gpa is just below 4 which is now needed. I think it’s like 3.98 or something.
Yeah. I suppose it’s really the GPA they changed, but there’s nothing we can do about that one at this point. He’d have to up his ACT to 34 which isn’t going to happen. He’s so done with testing and has no time to study for it this Fall with everything else going on anyhow. I guess we could just do a shot in the dark test, but it would probably be a waste of money.
Funny, I went to the U of MN but I was really impressed with the Iowa State campus. S20 prefers Minnesota though and that’s what counts, assuming he gets in. We’re in a St. Paul suburb so the location is perfect for a kid who doesn’t want to go too far.
I think the UMN campus feels a little more urban than it used to with the light-rail line going through it, but although you can see downtown Minneapolis from some places, IMO on the East Bank it doesn’t necessarily feel like you’re right in the middle of a city. Maybe I’m looking at it with an alum’s rose-colored glasses.
S20 says his “update available!” disappeared too; they must have updated whatever they were updating.
We’re visiting over MEA weekend. UMN on the 17th and ISU on the 18th. Either he’ll be overwhelmed and mix them up or seeing them both back to back will give him a clear idea of which campus he prefers, or maybe he’ll think they’re both too big.
I must say, it amuses me to no end that ISU is closer to the Twin Cities than it is from our house near the Iowa border, so we’re driving straight to Ames from the U of M visit and spending the night there. It doesn’t seem right that we could drive 2 hours north and be closer to Iowa. LOL But, I guess we’re driving a lot west as well.
My son said he got an email today saying his application was complete, even though it said that in the tracker all along, so I think that’s what the “update available!” was about.
