Rolling Admissions

My son was not accepted to Lawrenceville, so surprise or major disappointment. But, he is on the wait lise for both Peddie and Blair. He'd love to attend either. I won't say which one he (and our family) would prefer, as we wouldn't want to offend either should they be listening. We have a perfectly fine public high school right near our home and we could send him there and apply for admission as a 10th grader. We'll also have an 8th grade son applying with him next year (for 9th grade). My question is would it be worthwhile to have him apply to a school with rolling admissions for next year? We could use some FA, but could swing paying without it.

Please know that we're not so committed to BS that we want him to go just anywhere. Peddie and Blair are great fits for him. We have researched other schools and the only school we've come across with rolling admission (that we think is a great fit) is George School in Newtown PA.

If anyone can give some thoughts on rolling admissions, and George School in particular, I would appreciate.

Thanks, you've all been so helpful and supportive.

I've posted before, but last April, my son applied (and was accepted) to 4 schools. One of the schools. All had cut off dates. But most schools will consider a late applicant if they have room, and in some cases, even if they say they are full. My son plays lax, so that helped. We were not applying for FA as we knew that ship had sailed. We did apply for it this year and received some aid.
My advice is to consider every school as having "rolling admission", even if it isn't listed as such. It can't hurt to ask.

My son attends NMH, and he looked closely at Peddie and Blair (he ultimately didn't apply -- he had to narrow the list). NMH does accept late applications, so you might check them out -- he has been very happy there and it is a great school.

As far as FA -- if you can "swing payment without it", then my guess is the school will come to the same conclusion and not award any aid. At this point in the game, FA will likely not be available.

I agree if you are full pay then you can get into a number of great schools. One school told a friend that they always have a couple of slots stay open for full pays. I think the school is in Maryland. She also has two sons that decided last summer to go to boarding school and they visited a school that accepted them both as full pay. Of course these are not top 10 schools but are pretty well known.

I needed to bump the post because I still need lots of help.

You have two ways to focus. First after this week contact both WL schools to try to get a sense of WL procedures, possibilities, what more you can send etc. Regarding additional applications, I would want to visit the schools if at all possible to get as much info as possible. Maybe your s could spend a day with a student there. Also after april 10, the SSAT website lists schools that are still accepting applicants (after reply deadlines.)

Have you considered day schools? In NJ, depending on where you live, there are a lot of excellent schools. I do not know the schools in PA, so I can't help you there. In the chances thread, there were some postings regarding NJ day schools, and location, so you might take a look there.

George School is a really great school and will definitely accept applicants late. It has a really beautiful campus (it may have actually of been my favorite out of lville, peddie, and gs) and offers the IB program, which is really cool. It's a great school to consider!

If you applied for financial aid but feel that you can swing no aid on a rolling admissions school, then you should let your 2 waitlist schools know that you do not need aid. This year schools have seen their endowments shrink, so I am guessing that many of them could not offer as much fa as in recent years. Anyway, this could make a difference in your son's waitlist status. Stay on the waitlist, and let both schools know that your son will attend if accepted.

I agree with the posts above. Take a look at the George School. I haven't seen it, but I've heard good things, and their endowment is slated to increase dramatically over the next few years because of a generous gift.

Burb Parent. You have been so helpful with all the Blair information. It really has been appreciated.
