Ok... so i'm thinking of double-majoring in french and music... only worry is, what can you do with a degree in French?!

Besides translate or a few other jobs, a langauge degree on its own isn't much help- which is why the vast majority of langauage majors double major or at least minor in something else. I've always considered it a good compliment to every major, and music could work, if you're talented enough. It depends on the school a lot of times. Would you want to compose in french? Or are these two distinct interests?

I plan on majoring in Spanish in college and being pre-med. Is that weird? I'm good at/like science and want to go into medicine, but I also love love love Spanish and don't feel like spending my college years taking lots of lab courses.

it isn't weird, but you'll obviously be taking some lab courses. I notice science only gets a "good at/like" but Spanish gets a "love love love". Are you sure medicine is where your heart truly lies?

Oh no, I love science too and don't mind the lab. I've wanted to go to med school for years. It's just that I'm attached to the Spanish language and want to take advantage of what is probably my last chance to study it, in college. And hopefully within a future medical career I can combine these two interests.

partybabe, I don't know what your college plans are but I read about the University of St. Louis' Madrid campus that offers great programs for people who want to study premed and learn Spanish at the same time. Could be interesting for you, just a suggestion.

Hey partybabe, I'm doing the exact same thing. I'm pre-med, but majoring in Spanish. Georgetown has really good language programs, and a good pre-med program also. (I'm probably going there)

Awesome, I applied to Georgetown for the same reasons. And Middlebury, too. No clue where I want to attend, though.

My D is only in 9th grade but is leaning towards a major in journalism with a minor in French. What schools would you suggest she consider? Thanks

Partybabe, I'm just a parent wandering by, but I'm also an MD, and I can tell you that being a doc and Spanish proficient is a big plus. Wherever you end up in college, look around for opportunities to volunteer as a translator in a local hospital or free clinic - it is great pre-med experience for your med school app, and will help improve your idomatic and "medicine related" Spanish, a handy skill for a young doc today :).
