Can any student (current or former) or anyone with a good deal of knowledge about Williams comment on the strength of romance languages departments (specifically Spanish) there?

I'm only wondering because, as a prospective Williams student who may major in a language, I'd like for the school I attend to be strong in languages (obviously). But I've read that Williams isn't very "good" when it comes to Spanish/French/etc; in fact, I've read on CC numerous times that Williams' language department is pretty poor... Is this true?

(And please don't tell me to look at Middlebury if I want a place notably strong in languages, as that school's very much on my mind as well.)

Dear Gov,
We’ve had a challenging time trying to find a northeast school that is strong in languages and it’s true, everyone just blurts out Middlebury. Well, that’s great, if it is a match for someone. My son is a B student who excels in languages. We’ve found some nice programs in smaller schools doing exciting stuff. You won’t hear about it unless you research, visit, email professors, etc. It’s funny but MCLA also in Western Mass boasts the cross-registration to Williams for qualified candidates to enhance augment their language classes and study abroad. We’re visiting there today and will ask about this. It’s an interesting prospect. Many Catholic colleges have strong French [and other language] programs.

My son studied in Nice twice in the summers already which was a great experience.

Good luck with your search. Please post how you make out.

I’m going to assume that when you say Williams isn’t the place to major in languages you are speaking hyperbolically? How much worse off would you actually believe a Spanish major at Williams vs a Spanish major at some other top liberal arts college to be?

My understanding is that the “weakness” of Williams’ foreign language departments is mainly their size. You might want to check out these links for further information about courses offered, etc. Spanish looks to be one of the larger foreign language departments there.
