Hello, I’m very excited to have been accepted to participate in ROME - Reed Overnight Multicultural Experience. There is an itinerary from 2014 listed on the website; however, I wanted to know if anyone on this forum ever participated in the program. If so, what aspect of the program did you enjoy the most? What role did the experience have in your decision to choose Reed. I’m really looking forward to visiting Reed and seeing for myself what Reed is all about.
Congrats, I got accepted too! I wonder what it will be like…
Congratulations to you as well @WoodyD40. I’ll be arriving from Texas. Where will you be traveling from?
I’ve never been to the Pacific Northwest, so I’m looking forward to this trip. I’ve visited Swarthmore last month and can’t wait to check out Reed which was one of the first LACs that I really began reading up on about a year ago.
@texlaker I’ll be traveling from SoCal! The furthest north I’ve been on the West Coast is San Francisco, so I really have no clue what the Pacific Northwest is like. Most of the people that I’ve talked to have said that it is really beautiful, albeit it’s a bit rainy/cloudy. I’ve known about Reed since last year, but really started researching it this year.
And what a coincidence! I used to live in Texas as a matter of fact. I’ve lived in Miami (Panhandle, which, I know, sounds really exciting), Austin, and Houston!
I also got accepted!! Traveling from San Jose, CA (NorCal). This will be my second fly in program. I visited Swarthmore last month. So excited!!!
Portland is beautiful. It rains (remember that wet stuff that used to come from the sky in California?), which means that it is lush and green. The winter days aren’t as short as Seattle, but they will be noticeably shorter than California. Portland is a very accessible city: big enough and yet not too big. Have a great visit!

I still haven’t heard back yet, but there were a lot of delays with my application. I had to send an updated test score last Thursday. Do you think that I still may have a chance or do they send out decisions all at once?
@EdenDanny If you’re using Gmail, double check that the acceptance email didn’t end up in the “Promotions” tab. That’s where I found my ROME reply email. If that’s not the case, then they are probably still looking at your application. I’d imagine that it’s common courtesy for Reed to let you know if you got accepted into ROME or not, so if you haven’t gotten it yet, you probably have to wait just a little bit longer.
Yeah, I checked there and I couldn’t find an email. I’ll give it a day or so and then I’ll call admissions to make sure. It’s making me kind of nervous, but I’m trying not get too bummed out if I don’t get in.
Congrats to all of you guys for getting in I found out last Friday that I was rejected from ROME. Not going to lie I was bummed out and read the email by accident, I meant to read something for my SAT subject test and ended up reading the rejection email instead. I just hope this doesn’t negatively affect my chances on getting into Reed. @EdenDanny Did you manage to hear from the admissions office?
Congrats, guys!
@Loonytunes I never received an email so I called admissions and I talked to a ROME coordinator. He said I wasn’t accepted. He said that there were a ton more applications this year and this year was the most competitive it’s ever been and that ROME this year was way more competitive than actually getting into the school. If it helps, he actually went on to talk about how I shouldn’t feel discouraged or w/e and that there are plenty of people who were rejected from ROME and ended up becoming Reedies and currently are thriving. So this won’t really affect your chances at all. Personally I think this helps me understand what I need to improve on my application, which I figure are my pretty low test scores. Work hard on your application and don’t wait till the last minute like I did with ROME!
@EdenDanny I’m really glad you told me that, because for the past week I’ve been wracking by brains out, trying to find out why I was rejected, almost becoming hesitant to apply. In a way the fact so many people applied makes it feel less personal. And I can definitely see how applying to ROME was practice for the real thing, because that wqs my first time writing anything direct to a college. As for testing I’m in the same boat as you, writing essays are much more my speed but when it comes to those standardized tests it’s as though my brain turns into a vegetable, so I’m cramming for those this semester. If it weren’t for those tests I would have applied ED 1 but instead I’m doing ED2 to have more time and show them my upwards trend especially with senior grades. I actually have an interview in Florida this Saturday >.< Reed is still my first choice though, if this interests you here’s a thread for early decision applicants: http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/reed-college/1816172-reed-class-of-2020-ed.html. It’s sort of dead though, so it needs to be revived and there aren’t any domestic students besides myself on there.
@Loonytunes Yeah, it was a bit disheartening to hear that I didn’t get in, but I knew that I didn’t feel my application was quite ready when I submitted it, if that makes sense? While my essays were good, there still were things I forgot to mention, and the scores I submitted were not updated so I felt that it didn’t paint an accurate picture. I figure that the ROME admission peeps were more objective and weighted grades and test scores more since it was so competitive; I don’t think that this is what admission into Reed is actually like.
Yeah I’'m probably going to apply ED2 as well, which will give me time to work on my essays and add extra ECs I’m planning on doing.
Is your interview with a Reed representative? I just had mine last Wednesday. It was really cool, so I don’t think you should be worried.
It’s a little early, but I figure within the next month or so there’ll be more replies. I’m a domestic student as well~
I’ll prob join the thread. Thanks!
@EdenDanny Hey, sorry for responding so late, this week has been so chaotic. Yeah I heard the same thing through an email they sent out, but I’m still glad to have applied nonetheless and gain some sort of insight on what I need to improve on (mostly test scores). I had my interview too on Saturday and the interviewer was a very nice person, he just graduated last year from Reed (he’s an admission fellow, not sure what that means). It went well overall, it was just I guess I was so nervous that my real personality didn’t show as much as I would have liked it too, and ended up clamming up a bit. And no problem
This is a super late response, but I just wanted to add that I didn’t get into ROME last year and I was still admitted to the school and now attend it. Don’t stress out about it - they’re looking for different things.
