Room mates

When do entering students learn who their room mates are? I thought they were to hear this week.

From what I've been hearing, the letter is going to be mailed on Monday. Hopefully this is true :)

Thank you. Anyone who hears, please post. We will do the same. As we live near New York City, we should be among the first to hear.

We are about twenty miles from New York City. Received roommate info today. My daughter now has a room-mate who lives only a few miles away(same area code and county). And here I thought we were going to have a house guest-at least for Thanksgiving holiday!

I got my housing as well. My roomie lives in MD and I live in PA so it's not too far. Oh and I got placed in Reid. It's not what I wanted but I'm going to try to make the best of it.

everything in the quad is essentially the same, so it doesnt matter that reid isnt "what you wanted"... you'll have more or less the same experience everyone else will. i'd "wanted" a room in brooks (for the character) on a high floor (for the view) and ended up with a room in sulz on a low floor, but honestly it's all the same building and except for the fact that my view was a brick pole instead of broadway i didnt notice any difference. dont worry about it, you'll love barnard.

Oh I know that everything is pretty much the same and that everything is connected. I just had my heart set on another dorm (Brooks, and for the same reason as you). I stayed there for Welcome Weekend and just fell in love with it. Maybe it's because I've never seen Reid, so I'm just trying to gather as much information as I can. And yes, I know I'll love Barnard :)

Did you get specific move-in info (assigned time) with your packet? My d's packet arrived today and there are no specific instructions, other than the date (Aug 28). The orange flyer that came with the packet says "Move-in Information" is on page 2, but there is no page 2. (We have a 4 page flyer that has duplicate copies of the same two pages. Is it just us?)

Hmm I didn't get anything orange, but here's what I have on my page two :)

"You may move into your residence hall room on Monday, August 28, 2006. Plan to arrive according to the times listed below, depending on your assignment. If you are living on floor:

7 or 8: arrive between 7:00 a.m. and 8:30 a.m.
6 or 5: arrive between 8:30 a.m. and 10:00 a.m.
4 or 3: arrive between 10:00 a.m. and 11:15 a.m.
2: arrive between 11:15 a.m. and noon

The Broadway southbound traffic lane, closest to the main gate (117th and Broadway) will be blocked to regular traffic for move in day. Automobiles will be permitted to unload on Broadway during move in, but are not allowed to park on Broadway. You may be asked to wait in your car before unloading, so please be patient. If you are arriving by taxi, direct the driver to the front of the line (at 117th and Broadway) where representatives from the New Student Orientation Program will be available to assist you.

What To Expect Upon Your Arrival To Campus?

-Be aware of parking rules and regulations if you are arriving by car. The college cannot be responsible for ticketing or towing. NSOP volunteers will be stationed on Broadway throughout move in and they will provide parking information.

-You will unload your belongings from your car/taxi, etc. into a "chalked off" box on Broadway that has been assigned a number. (NSOP volunteers coordinate this system). Please remember you should never leave your care unattended while unloading or loading.

-NSOP volunteers will welcome you and let you know whether or not there is a wait for a cart which will assist in moving your belongings into the residence hall.

-Leaving your belongings within the "chalked off" bow, you must then enter the Barnard Hall lobby to "check in" to your residence hall. You will receive your room key and other important Residential Life information. You will also pick up your Orientation package at this time.

-You will return to your belongings (in the "chalked off" box) on Broadway and await a cart. NSOP volunteers will be happy to assist you in bringing your belongings to your room"

Sorry for any typos!

Stephanie, thank you so much for the info!!! I guess maybe they printed off different batches of the flyer in different colors, and the orange one was the batch that got messed up.

I really appreciate your taking the time to type out the whole section. That is very helpful and very sweet. I am assuming that the instructions were the same for all residence halls? (that is, it doesn't specify the dorm?) My daughter is in Sulzberger... I see from your earlier post that you will be in Reid.

Oh it wasn't a problem at all! I know if it was me, I'd be going crazy not knowing what was going on.

Yes, the instructions were for all residence halls. There are two more pages on "The Role of the RA", "Your Friendly RAs Share "I Wish I Had Known..."", "Tips About Living With Your Roommate", and "What If My Roomate and I Don't Get Along...?" If you don't have those either I'd be happy to scan them for you and your daughter :)

Calmom, you might also call reslife and see if they can't send you those pages as PDF files or something...But, I agree Stephanie is a doll! I know your daughter will have a blast! Tell her not to worry too much about the assigned times...she can arrive as early as she wants to (the earlier the better, probably).

She is going to have a WONDERFUL year!!!!!!

I hope you are doing well :)

Stephanie, we have 2 copies of the pages that have "What is First-Year Focus", "Tips about living with your roommate" and "What if my roommate and I don't get along". So what we are missing are the pages with "Move-in Information" (which you sent us), "The role of the RA" and "I Wish I had Known - Adice from RA's". Barnard also sent me a "Family Newsletter" flyer that had a lot of info about what RA's do, so I think we've got that part figured out. -- I guess if the "I wish I had known" advice is something that has very specific info then we would need it, but if it is general tips like the living-with-roommate stuff, I'm sure my d. will figure that stuff out on her own. But thanks for offering.
