okay so i got the umd package and saw that when picking your roomate you only get like 4 questions and they dont give you and oppurtunity to write down which dorm building is your first choice. i taught the roomate slection would be more indept, but is this it? and unlike other colleges can we not pick a specific building as our first choice? or they just put u in one of the freshman dorm buildings randomly? maybe we will get more forms or is this it?

i was wondering the same thing.l. are they really only going to ask 4 questions about roommate preferences? I was surprised they were already asking

From what I've seen in my freshmen year, they try to group you together by characteristics.

Asians will usually dorm with asians, stuff like that. They'll also group you by which Honors program you are in, if any. That alone will give you priority in building selection. Gemstones get Ellicott, Cambridge Community for Scholars, etc.

Besides that, I don't know how else they do it.

What about pure Honors (not Gemstone or Scholars or Humanities)? Where do they dorm?

Pure Honors is usually Denton.

If you are lucky, you may possibly find yourself in Queen Anne, or Anne Arundel Hall, which do have air conditioning. But only approximately 220 students get into those Halls.

How can the dorms NOT have air conditioning!?!?! That's really dumb... I mean, Maryland is not like Maine or Mass. It can be 85 degrees in September and even (though rare) October. That's crazy!

i would think they would put people of different races together. dont they want diversity, and i think a major part of college is being exposed to other cultures. so why put asians together, blacks together, etc. i want to put with a person outside of my race and learn about them.

At first I thought not having AC was kinda crazy too, but as long as you have the fans going, it's not bad at all. The humidy is what's killer though.

Coasting, what I was talking about was only for individual rooms, and only what I've observed. You will have basically have every single ethnicity/race/religion living on your floor, and you will be exposed. For some, it very well may be a culture shock. But there is no lack of diversity on campus or in the dorms.

My floor last year consisted of Catholic, Protestants, Luterans, Jews, Buddhists, and Muslims last semester as far as religions went.

We had "blacks", "whites", etc, but culturally we had Southwest Asians, Southern Asians, Oriental Asians, Central Americans, Northern and Southern Africans, French, and maybe even a few more different cultures. And this was only on one floor.

does not having AC mean you don't have heating too...?

The heat works well, almost too well in some peoples' opinion. You'll never be cold in your room as a freshman, I can assure you that.
