Roomate Assignments...?

Hey, I was just wondering how roommates are assigned at Marist for freshmen. Is there a roommate survey or is it completely random? I have seen no information from the school on this matter. Thankyou :)

Hi! On the admitted student day you are given a survey for roommates, and you also get to put in your first , second, third, etc choice dorms. You do get to visit the dorms as well. The survey asks questions like, are you an early riser, night owl, neat freak, or messy, etc that kind of thing. But they seem to go by demographics as well as I’ve noticed alot of students from say LI paired together- unless thats just random. They do triple up freshman, and they go by the date you paid your deposit. The later you paid your deposit (closer to May 1) the bigger the chance you will be tripled.
Hope this helps, and Good Luck!

At orientation you’ll fill out a survey that asks questions such as your sleeping and study habits. They judge roommates off of that survey. As a junior at Marist my roommate situation worked out great freshmen year and I haven’t really heard of any problems otherwise. They do a great job with that!

Adding to the above, if worse comes to worse and you are unhappy with your roommate you are allowed to request a new one during your second semester of your freshmen year. Marist tries to have roommates that are in disagreements work out their differences as that is part of life and college is supposed to help you grow and prepare you for adulthood. However, during second semester, I noticed new students moving into my floor and some moving into a different dorm because all their friends were there, etc. Thankfully, I had a positive experience and learned a lot living with another person. I noticed that Marist did a great job pairing up roommates. For example my two friends who were roommates were both night owls and messy where as another pair went to bed earlier and were very tidy. Be honest on the survey! On a side notes, there are a few singles, a ton of double rooms, and some triples as dorm rooms depending where you live.

@petcat‌ touched on this before, but is it more likely to be with someone from your area if you’re both similar? ie would they pair you with someone from the same part of the state with similar interests before pairing you with someone who lives hours away? Basically- how much do location and demographics factor in?

I work in admission and have friends in housing. When it comes to roommates location and demographics do not play a role in the housing assignments. I lived with girls from two different states, and I know others who do had the same experience. Housing is more focused on making sure that two people will be able to live together happily.

@GoddessofWisdom‌ great, thank you!!
