Roomate requests when signing up for housing

So, I have absolutely no idea with whom I want to room next year. I feel rather uncomfortable asking total strangers to become my roommate with me over the internet. That being said, I'd like to be matched up with someone similar to the survey the applicants had to fill out. Should I browse roommates and request everyone that shows up on the list? Or would Cornell automatically match me up with someone similar to me even if I don't fill out the requests?

Maybe you could attend a Cornell visit session and lobby for a roommate? Heh...

cornell should automatically match you with someone who filled out the survey questions similar to you. but cornell housing comes up with some pretty strange assignments sometimes. at the same time, i've never heard of anyone actually requesting a roommate from the list cornell gives you. if i were you though, i would just let cornell assign me.

you figure out once you come here that housing is in fact really important, but that whether you end up liking your housing is completely random. It's really not as simple as picking a roommate off facebook (or the housing website) and getting into one of the new dorms. so my advice is to just let it happen.

Thanks, Elgguj. That's what I wanted to do, but I just wanted to hear it from someone else.

no probs !

how hard is it to get a single as a freshman?

not hard at all. dickson alone has about 400 co-ed singles. actually a lot of people last year got singles who didnt want them.

Does it count as applying if we stop on the roommate request page....i.e. - I don't select 'save & continue' on the roommate request page?

so I requested someone who I talked to a bit and if he's the only person I request (and vice versa) then what are my chances of rooming with him?

basically 100%

I put "single" as my first preference. Can I change it now? Because I feel like I want to challenge myself by having a Turkish roommate. Though, I am still not sure!

Any suggestions?

i submitted my housing app and then decided that i wanted to change it, so i called the general housing number listed at housing.cornell.edu. They were able to change my application and re-submit it in a span of three minutes. great service!

also, i know that there's a facebook group called 'find a cornell roommate!,' where guys and girls are posting more specific info than just "do you study with background noise?" that might be a good place to search for a roomie, if you're concerned that you'll be randomly paired with a total creeper, lol

eh i accidentally signed the contract thing already... is that gonna be a problem...

What’s gonna happen if I have more than one roommate request and choose a double as my preference 1? Will I get a triple or the system will assign me with one of the requested roommates in a double?

Whoa… Why did you post on a thread over three years old?
Haha.

With that said: Don’t know.
You’re welcome for helping. Haha.

I posted bc I didn’t want to make a new thread.

and thanks lol

my question is still open!

If cornell gives you a list of potential roommates, I suggest contacting some people. You should meet up with them or at least chat online with them to see what they’re like. You’ll be spending 8 months in the same room. It’s really important

There’s an online roommate matching service called uroomsurf (it might be called ■■■■■■■■ now, not sure) that is a lot more specific than the information Cornell asks. I actually found my roommate on that, and it has worked out well this past year. There is a fee if you want to see the actual specifics of how you match another person; otherwise, it just gives you a compatibility percentage (ex. you and the other person match 95% on your answers). I think the fee was something like 9 dollars (total, not for each person you look at). The survey asked questions about what time you get up/go to bed, what temperature you like the room, noise level, your expectations in a roommate (“we do everything together” or not), religious beliefs, how often you’ll have guests over, and a lot of other things the Cornell questionairre doesn’t touch on. You could take a look at it if you wanted a little more control over who you’re matched with.

I think that site wants you to pay for access to more detailed information about possible roommates. Don’t go to it.

did the 2 (or more) roommate requests you accepted accept each other as well? i e-mailed housing. they said housing pref trumps roommate pref. so the system will try to place all 3 into a double (if that’s your first choice) which is impossible, then randomly boot 1 and try again. it’s possible that all the doubles are used up (or partially used up) then you might not even get to room with the people who you accepted (but will be matched according to questionnaire results). hope that helps.
