You really don't think you will use her fridge? No soda or water or milk or ice? No fruit? No jelly for PB&J? What do you do when you miss a meal? Which does happen due to office hours, study groups, or just bad schedules.
My roommate was always trying to lose weight and she never had much good food around so she would eat mine...

I think that if you don't bring the microwave, you will look like a cheapskate.

If you were my roomate, and you didn't bring anything b/c you weren't going to use it, I wouldn't even let you keep a drop of water in my fridge. Get the damn microwave. Keep the peace.

are you sure youre not going to use a microwave? i think it would come in handy in college. O_______o

I forgot to add, your roomie may think you are weird. Imagine being on the recieving end of, "oh I don't plan on using a TV, fridge, or microwave during college." Its like being told someone dosen't plan to change their underwear during college. It just comes accross as odd.

Maybe she thinks you are amish and don't believe in modern conveniences.

Please...I find it extremely hard to believe that someone won't use a fridge or tv that will be sitting right there in the room for ten months.

If she gets half as annoyed as I do about moochers, you'll have some problems if you don't stick to your word about that.

So, you've gone all summer without tv and cold drinks and reheated food of some kind? I doubt it. It's going to be hell for you if you plan on starting on move-in day. Even if it's only to watch the news in the morning, you'll use the tv. Even if it's only to have cold ice water always on hand, you'll use the fridge. And if you need a quick snack when you're cramming for finals at 2am, you'll pop some fat-free popcorn in that microwave.

If I were you I would buy that microwave. The girl from taiwan obviously can't do it, and the other girl is bringing the fridge and tv. Who are you to decide that the other 2 can't have a microwave just because YOU don't see the need for one? If I were you're roomie who's bringing the TV and fridge, I would already have you pegged as someone who's selfish, inconsiderate of others, and unwilling to make compromises and adjustments for being in a triple. You must have known for a while that you wouldn't want to bring appliances of any kind, and yet you act as if your roomie(s) would be fine with that. If you plan on approaching everything with this stubborn "my way or the highway" attitude, then you are in for a long and rough year. Good luck!

You don't need a TV, but you WILL need a fridge and most probably a microwave. So cough up the $50.

frostburg, i didn't watch any tv - not even the news - during my four years of college. and i'm sorry for those of you that do - stop sitting around and go out and do something. and i haven't watched any since either.

as for a fridge, i don't know anyone who didn't use their fridge. just to keep milk in or even water. and microwaves are great for popcorn.

and jeparle, i understand what you're saying about not using them so why purchase them, however if my future roommate told me they weren't willing to bring a microwave, i wouldn't room with that person.

If you want to lose weight in college I would go for less time in the cafeteria and more in your room where you can buy and make healthy foods and snacks. If you don't have something around that you can eat, you'lll be more likely to order a pizza or go to a friend's room to eat her hot chocolate and hostess cupcakes. Just get a microwave so that there aren't tensions betweeen you and your roommate before school even starts. Then you can make low fat popcorn and coffee. You will use it much more than you think.

I agree with frostburg in don't expect your Taiwanese roommate to bring anything except her clothes, laptop, accessories, etcetcetc. That's probably going to take her to the baggage weight limit already, anything like a microwave would just be impossible.

jeparlefrancais, if you are that concerned about your future roomie's current reaction, why not just ask HER about it, and not us CCers. After all, WE won't be living with you in the Fall!

My opinion, don't purchase anything that you really don't want, but do talk to your roomie about other "shared" room items that may be of interest and any other issues that there may be.

I didn't plan on using a fridge, microwave or tv when i got to college. I'm glad I went without the TV (saved money and made it easier to study) but when my roomie said he was getting a fridge/microwave and wondered if I would chip in for it, there was no way I could've just said "no im not going to use it" and I'm glad because it comes in really handy, mostly because you are going to want cold water or other drinks on hand especially in the fall and spring and especially if youre going to be exercizing (which i am assuming you will be if you plan on losing weight). I never thought I would need the microwave until I got really sick and my friends bought me some microwavable soup - then I was really glad I had it.

yeah, my roommate and i both agreed we didnt want a fridge or microwave, and then both ended up regretting it. So we just mooched off our hallmates.

well, since you parle francais, let me put it quite simply: achete le micro-onde, sinon tes camarades de chambre vont penser que tu es mechante et egoiste.

"If I were the one reading that email I would think you were cheap."

She’s living in a triple for a reason.

"do you REALLY think you wont need a microwave at all? common now honey, you must be kidding. so you wont ever need to heat up a bagel or coffee?"

Unless your a total fat ass, how hard it is to walk a few feet to an elevator and go to the lobby of most dorms which have microwaves, vending machines, ect..

She’s living in a triple for gods sakes, and this stupid chick wants to get a refrigerator, a microwave, and a TV all at the same time....I'd be ****ed to.

"small microwaves are cheap (less than $50), just buy it" I rather save that $50 for 5 tickets to the movies. It's not her fault her roommate is lazy.

"What do you do when you miss a meal?"

I panic then run down the halls naked...until I realize that there are snacks that don't need to be kept cold or microwaved.

"If you were my roomate, and you didn't bring anything b/c you weren't going to use it, I wouldn't even let you keep a drop of water in my fridge."

Yeah it's like those people who don't want to go to the movies and spend because they don't want to see the movie that’s playing...what a total duesh [/Sarcasm off]

"Its like being told someone dosen't plan to change their underwear during college."

Yeah it totally like that. Because not having proper hygiene and not being a complete lazy fat ass is very comparable.

"I agree with frostburg in don't expect your Taiwanese roommate to bring anything except her clothes, laptop, accessories, etcetcetc."

But the third girl shouldn't be able to use anything if she doesn't bring anything...do you see how faulty that logic is?

If a roommate of mine brought a huge refrigerator in a triple, then didn't let anyone in the room use it, that guy could find a place other than our room to put his crap. If I bring something that’s going to encroach on the space of others, I fully expect to share it, provided they are comfortable with me having it in the first place. It's called being polite.

So, in my expert opinion, you roommates being a pushy biznatch.

hahahaa

thats a good point actually. if there is a kitchen on your floor etc, then you really dont need to bring a microwave. minfridge i understand, but microwave? it doesnt even make sense to me if there is one in your building...

What school are you going to 'girl who speaks french'?

Do you ever use a microwave at home? If you buy one this year, it’s yours to keep. So you would have it if you ever moved in to an apartment in college (and off the meal plan). And after college when you get your own place. Those things can last a long time…

Anyways, food found in fridges and made in microwaves can be healthier than food ordered take-up and out of vending machines. Try not using the microwave and fridge you have at home for a week and see if you get sick of the options.

"Do you ever use a microwave at home?"

I've got a better question, do you have a microwave in your room at home?

"So you would have it if you ever moved in to an apartment in college (and off the meal plan)."

Most good apartments com furnished with a fridge and a microwave.

"Try not using the microwave and fridge you have at home for a week and see if you get sick of the options."

Try using a mini fridge at home for a week and see if you get sick of the options.

Oh come on now, it is really that hard to walk, at most, 50 yards to use a microwave? And a college town with tons of food options will likely keep you busy for the entire year. Unless your picky about food.
