Roomiest Dorms in Central and North?

Hey all. Just a quick question about dorms at U of M. Which dorms are the roomiest/nicest in Central and North that are available to Freshman? I really don't care about the party atmosphere or anything of the like, but a good size living space is a big deal. Thanks!

I think it depends on the room itself, there are different sized rooms in each building. My room is a 14x19 double with three closets in East Quad, but some of them aren’t that great. The only thing I have heard regarding any sort of trend is that Markley has little rooms, but that’s just what I’ve heard.

Martha Cook easily has the largest rooms on campus. I’ve seen most of the dorms by now, and yeah. It’s a home-style atmosphere but if you want to party it seems you can find a way to party pretty easily.

well first of all, as a freshman you can’t say which dorm you want on the central or hill campus. when you get housing you pick either central/hill, bursley, or baits. markley is a complete freshman dorm and i find it fun, but loud, and has some of the smallest 11 by 12 rooms on campus. i heard oxford singles are 16x10. Someone told me Alice Lloyd has large rooms on the hill? But to be completely honest, I’d rather be in my cave in Markley than anywhere on North Campus.

I heard Baites actually has some pretty nice dorms…

My room (Bursley Double) is 11x14.

If you get into Honors and elect Honors housing, you could get a room in South Quad (prime location!) with 12 x 19 rooms. :)

The best housing for any year is Martha Cook, the oldest all women’s dorm on campus. There is a separate application process and its very traditional. Lots of old traditions like sit down dinners and friday afternoon tea. Men are only allowed in the dorm during certain hours and guests MUST be escorted at time. Its a very community oriented place, so you need to want to live here more than just because it has huge rooms.

Mary Markley has small rooms and is in a weird spot on campus, not really close to anything (but close to MoJo for food!)

Definitely not desirable there.

I would argue Mojo has some of the best food, though, and they are close to the arboretum and the gym. And really only like a 10-15 minute walk from everything else.

I definitely prefer my location at EQ, but I woundn’t think it would be hard to make the best of the location up there.

i dont know about specfic dorms, but i have a friend that lives on the north campus and he says it kinda sucks because he is somewhat disconnected from the main campus.

are there single rooms, and where???

Singles everywhere; cost more and depends where you place in lottery.

My son is in Alice Lloyd Hall; rooms are comparatively spacious (think 14x19?) but still has to loft to make it work. He likes it a lot there.

At the end of the day, you don’t get to choose unless you apply and are accepted to a community living program, or honors (south) etc. Further, I wouldn’t base a decision on where to attend on the dorm, because for some, all dorms are bad, you get through it, move to a single or coop in soph year; and for others, if the dorm were 6x6 they wouldn’t give it up because they LOVE the social aspect of community living. So whichever camp you fall into, I don’t think the dorms influence school choice nearly as much as the environment, peers, rigor, rep etc. Just my .02
