And I was just complaining about when are we gonna be able to see our assigments! I would like for everyone to post their dorm/residence halls! Like this:

East Halls/Sproul Hall (Which is actually mine!)

Nope, ours isn’t posted yet either. I’m wondering if they start with East to get most of the freshmen done first. If so, we’ll be waiting a while since our sons won’t be in East. (They’re supposed to be rooming together, so there’s no anticipation about finding out their roommates, but it would be nice to know what dorm they’ll be in.)

They might be having a problem with the site. My son who is doing leap this summer said that after midnight last night he saw the room postings, but this morning when I went on to check they weren’t there. He was actually given a suite in North, but has made some friends in Leap and would actually like to switch to East which is where they will be. Does anyone know if this is possible? I would think that it is probably easier to switch from a suite to east than the other way around. Any advice on how you do this would be appreciated.

Apparently, there was a mistake in putting these up. They should be up by the 24th.
According to housing, it shouldn’t have been posted. The list isn’t final yet.

So I requested to have the same room from last year, and I just checked eLiving and it says I have the same room for Fall 2009 to Spring 2010. :)

Enjoy even getting housing at Penn State because my son did not in the lottery. With only 14,000 beds and 40,000 students housing is a problem. It is a very difficult situation especially when you want to be on campus.

Wierd… supposedly everyone who requested a housing contract who previously lived on campus got one.
Also 40k students are not applying for housing contracts many opt to live off of campus (This decision is often made before contracts are even due.)

I was told the same thing by someone from the housing dept., that everyone who requested housing got it (although in some cases it may have been supplemental or other types of housing they may not want). Perhaps your son fell through the cracks somehow. I suspect the majority of non-freshmen students don’t request on-campus housing. We only took on-campus this year because they won’t let S2 (a freshman) live off-campus, even though he has an older brother there. We can’t wait to get them off-campus next year because it will be much cheaper.

for my son, it was not cheaper to live off campus. The monthly cost was about the same…but the leases are for one full year…so if you’re not planning to stay for the summer, that’s a big extra cost. My son was NOT able to sublease his apt so that ended up being wasted $ (he would disagree because he had a place to stay during summer artfest, but that’s hardly worth the cost!)
Now, if you live three to a room or very far from campus, it might be cheaper. the range of prices is pretty big.
Oh…and we kept the meal plan. Boys don’t usually do that well cooking for themselves and I wanted to make sure he was eating OK!

I guess one factor is whether you keep the meal plan. In our case, we probably wouldn’t - or maybe we’d get one meal plan and have them share it, which is basically what we did this year when our younger son would stay on-campus with his brother.

We know many kids (including some of our nephews) who are living off-campus much more cheaply than it would be to live on-campus. Right now, we are paying around $800/month room and board for each kid (that’s just what we pay to PSU, and doesn’t count the extra food we buy ourselves). For both sons, that comes to $1600/month total. They can definitely live off-campus much cheaper than that. If money weren’t a factor, though, we’d prefer to have them live on-campus, just for the convenience and proximity to classes.

Oh, and toneranger, you are absolutely right - prices vary greatly depending on your location (and other factors). We’ve noticed that prices tend to be lower as you move away from downtown.

We know one family with a child off-campus who bought just enough of a meal plan to cover one meal on campus a day (lunch or dinner). That way they knew he had an opportunity to eat some veggies at least once a day. ;)

When my son did not get housing this year we didn’t wait to see if he was going to get supplemental housing or not.We knew this would be a difficult living situation for him.So we searched right away off campus.

Well, now it’s official, folks! Rooming information has been viewable for just about everyone. Now, I could do what I’ve wanted to do at the beginning of this post; I’m just gonna switch it up a bit. State the address and dorm, like so (mine):
