I know there's a discussion about this over at College Life, but I'd like your opinions.

Have any of you had a positive experience with rooming with a friend freshman year? I've heard a lot of negative ones, but never any positive. My best friend and I are hoping to room with each other, and so this debate is seriously beginning to worry me.

don't do it. even if you have a fine experience with them, you will be limiting your exposure to campus. live in different dorms even. that way you get to double the amount of floors you have contact with. the more people you know the more likely you will be pleased with your columbia education. after all, arent connections one of the reasons we go here?

its better to meet new people, as skraylor said. you also run the risk of only hanging out with your roommate with this setup. save it for upperclassmen years.
