I was accepted into the Honors program and have already confirmed my decision online, but am still debating how I want to go about housing. A friend of mine was also accepted, but did not make it into either Honors or Scholars (he actually was invited into the International Community program, but plans to decline). My question is, if we were to request each other as roommates, would I be moved into a regular dorm, or would he be moved up to an Honors dorm? I'd prefer to stay in the Queen Anne's or Anne Arundel dorms, I'd just like to know how this would affect Honors housing.

I'm pretty sure you'd get moved down. At least ,thats what happened to a friend of mine two years ago. Although I'm not sure if he opted out AND chose his non-honors friend as a roomie or if he just chose the non-honors roommate. If that makes any sense

no i think you can bring him along. That is what some tour guide said for the scholar dorms...

keep in mind that you will most likely not end up in AA/QA hall your freshman year and will be in denton (the high-rise honors dorm) anyway....therefore, your friend will probably have similar housing to you and it doesn't really matter where you end up.

My D. is an honors student at UMD and from my understanding you would have to move to a non-honors building to be assured to get the roommate..though sometimes non honors kids are in honors dorms there is usually a special circumstance.

Denton is nicer than many of the non-honors dorms from what my D. said (she roomed there her first year) She is in AA now and loves it!

I hear denton is the place to be. One of my guides basically told us to go to Denton and get out of the scholar dorms if we want to have fun. I think i might decide to live outside the scholar dorms.

"go to Denton and get out of the scholar dorms if we want to have fun."

lol are you serious? i guess its impossible to have fun if you dont live in Denton, huh.

well i told my cousin this who lived in a scholars dorm and he seemed mildly offended. He was asking for the name of the kid who said it and all. The person who told me never lived in a scholar dorm so...

denton really is a lot of fun. i don't know much about the scholars dorms but i had a great time when i lived in denton my 1st semester

Denton is the honors dorm. So you would usually have to be in honors to get in there. My D. was in honors and assigned to Denton the first year. She liked it for one year..but she is not a partier and found it noisy and was lucky to get AA next year.

yah, i think he was talking about the denton community and not just denton itself. The other two are like elkton and eastern or something like that. Aren't those two for everyone?

any non honors/scholars dorm is one where the rooms are tiny, the bathrooms communal, and the noise level high.

yeah, elkton & easton are the other 2 in the denton community. they're regular freshman dorms.

and to clarify what naptown said: honors/scholars dorms also have communal bathrooms, and all except anne arundel & queen anne's (& somerset, for CIVICUS) have tiny rooms also :P
