If you don't request a specific roommate, how do they assign them? Is it completely random?

I don't know how they assign them.....

But if you are asian, your roommate will probably be asian too(from experience of my friends).

My son is a freshman. We had requested a double and to be part of the Residential Learning Communities. In his case the business school. He did get into the program but wound up with a quad (but a very big room). Three of them including my son are business majors but the 4th roommate who was from China never showed up. They place a kid about a month later who was not a business major. His hallway consists of this room and the rest are singles. According to at least a few kids on his hall they asked for doubles and got singles. So it really is pot luck. In terms of roommates, they did not send out a questionaire asking specific questions to help them match roommates.

The assignment is random, unless, probably, you indicate a preference. I'm Asian (transfer student from Asia), but I have an American roommate for Fall 2009.

COmpletely random... embrace it though. you might hate your roommate but you might also find a long-lost brother like i did!

look at this website, it tells u about the assignment

Thanks for the link mike100!

its random. i live with people of different majors, totally different interests…which is kinda hard

its not really random. Like lets say if you are Asian, it is incredibly likely that you will be roomed with another Asian.

which sucks…

if i go to buffalo, i hope i have a cool roomate not some jerk

There is a period in which you can change. But I will tell you that even if you do get a jerk, learning how to properly deal with people of all types is a critical resource you will attain.

but thats just to some point… if they’re just to jerky…than thats hard lol

ahhh yeah im nervous i get a jerky roommate too hopefully someone who likes naruto i love that show…or bleach…so do you people know anything about buffalo… I heard two negative things about it…that it snows and is freezing cold all the time…in which case i atleast hope theres snowboarding…and also b/c of the 3 campuses your traveling around all day on buses to your classes. I was just wondering about that.

yes, if you don’t request, your roommates will be chosen at random. but not completely.
i think it works according to your nationalities, for international students, they usually have their roommates who are from the same country or regione, i like it :D

buffalo does get a lot snows, but this year its getting really better, it stop snowing around late feb which is good! oh - you should definitely join clubs of snowboarding/skiing on campus, they have a lot activities going on. my friends skis a lot with the club

and snowtubing!!!

i just visited Ub yesterday, the dorms are HUGEE!! everywhere else it was like walking into a cramped closet, but the dorm was really really nice!

thanks cristinegelato i dont mind the snow but i was just nervous if they have skiing and stuff but now i feel a little better as long as theres skiing and snowboarding to go with the snow i wont mind it…ahhh its going to be so awsome i cant wait

twighlight— are the dorms u saw for freshman though or did u see senior dorms and i hope they put us in with people of similar majors or sports or something so that way u would immediately have something in common with ur roomy …random doesnt sound good to me

My daughter is a freshman this year living in Governors–Roosevelt Hall. Her room is TINY!!! And her roommate was chosen totally at random. My daughter is a dance major and her roommate is a Physics and Chemistry major. LOL. Could those be more opposite? And also, this theory about nationalities being together might be true for international students, I don’t know. But otherwise, my daughter is Korean and her roommate is caucasian. So much for that theory. Thankfully they get along great, which would be really important given how small the room is. But overall, she is very happy at UB, so I don’t want to discourage anyone. But it is a state school, so the accomodations are not going to be the best compared to some private schools, for example.

really?

i saw 2 dorms, one in governors, and one in ellicot and they were both great sizes, hmm thats weird.
