Hey--guess this goes out to mainly current UNC students or some one pretty familiar with it.

I know about UNC's roommate finder and I'm signed up for it, but do they also do random roommates? Does anyone have a rough idea of how many people go the random route--it's all I had ever really been familiar with until I got into UNC or you were living with a friend.

Second--I know MOST, not all, freshman live in E-haus, Craige, or Hinton James. Are these dorms all freshman or is there a chance some freshman will end up in a suite with upperclassmen? If you do a random roommate, are they automatically going to be a freshman, i'd assume so? When you fill out your housing application, do you get to preference the dorms you want to be in?

It's really rare if they put you with a sophomore through potluck (random roommates), but it happens. The good news is if that happens you're generally on north campus.

But I think they're really understanding if you call and say, hey, I ONLY want a first year roommate. I'd be adamant about that.

I think the whole housing thing is a tough choice - it would feel good to pick your roommate, but then, who says if someone listens to the same music as you you two will get along when the room gets really messy? Then again, you could be put with a really, really crazy person if you go potluck. Or your soul mate.

You might want to look at your freshman roommate experience as just that - an experience. Go into it hoping that at the end of the year, you'll still be on speaking terms with that person. By the way, this isn't a Carolina thing, this is an every single college with roommates thing. It's really hard to get along with someone who you live with during such a stressful/sleepless time as your first year of college.

You have three choices about your favorite communities.

I'm also a first-year student, and I applied for Morrison with pot luck. I was signed up for roommate finder, but I'm pretty impatient, and I just signed up because I really loved that dorm. Anyway, I think you should have a similar experience either way--if you don't like your roommate, just opt for a different one after a semester or the first year. That's probably the route I will go if I don't like my roommate.

Good luck and congratulations on your admission!
