just curious. is it mandatory for freshmen (or even sophomores, juniors, etc.)to live with a roommate at all colleges? i'm not sure, but i've heard that some lac's require at least two years of living with a roommate. i'm now a second-year at uva and no longer obliged to live in a double room, which makes me quite happy. =)
please do fulfill my curiosity if anyone knows. thanks.

I think it depends on the college and the amount of housing available

Majority of colleges require that you live in unversity dorms either freshman year or both freshman and sophomore year (some but not many require it all four years). Most dorm rooms are double rooms but usually there are also some, but not many, tripples and singles. However, singles can be very difficult to get as a freshman because sophomores and above get first choice of room types. Net result is that most freshman end up in double rooms.

Mine has a single. We had to pay more, but it was worth it for him - difficult courseload and odd study hours. Sophomore year he says he will probably want a roommate.

most freshman have their roomate as one of their bestfriends in the first year, well atleast i did, its a good way to meet people b/c you both are new and can expierence different stuff, and maybe your rtoomate lives in the state and can show you around
