Roommate packet

Has anyone gotten the roommate packet in the mail yet?

Yes. I got mine today, as did one of my two roomates. Also misterme got his.. must have been a few days ago. You should get it soon (probably tomorrow) if you haven't gotten it yet.

Hey-
Aren't you in Wiess? I got my packet on Friday and I'm from NJ - but it seems like they may have not sent them out all at once cause I don't know anyone else who got it then. Also, none of my roommates have contacted me yet (even though I e-mailed them) so if you didn't get it then maybe some of them didn't get it either.

-Adam

My son, who hadn't received anything before yesterday, received everything together in one large packet from Sid Rich. Chock full of everything from roommates to booklets to a letter to us (his parents). Wonderfully welcoming. I think it is the best! ;-)

I think each college sends their own packet. Apparently Sid Rich did it later than the rest because they decided to do everything at once.

I think Sid Rich sent theirs LAST because their "biggest tradition" is being LAST and letting all of the lesser colleges go first (at least that is what I read in my D's booklet that came with everything yesterday). D is in Ocean City with friends for senior trip so won't be able to email roommate(s) until she gets back next week. She is excited that she got a suite.. JENSKATE - where are you?? What can you tell me about Sid??

I can tell you about Sid!!! I can tell you about Sid!!! I was at Sid. =)

Sid Rich is the tallest building on campus, and we've got incredible views. There are "seven" floors, meaning that the buttons go up to 7 on the elevators, but in the lobbies on each floor, there are about five steps up to the upper level and five steps down to the lower level, so we're actually a fourteen-story building. You'll live on something like "upper fifth" or "lower second"... That's how the terminology for floors goes. All the rooms are in four-man suites, with two people per room and a shared bathroom. There are two windows per room, and they're pretty big windows, so you get a lot of light, which is nice. Each floor has a huge lobby with couches and stuff, and a balcony. Great views from the balcony. Don't throw anything overboard aside from free-flowing water. You will get busted, and they will lock the balconies for a while, and everyone will get mad at you.

Our tradition of being "last" has lost steam since Martel is now the most recently founded college, and they get to go last now. It's kind of a shame... But we still have never lost Beer Bike! (If it looks like we're not going to win, we disqualify ourselves... past disqualifications have involved nudity and tiki torches... beware!)

Our motto is "Mors de Super," and is on our crest, which is on our stoles at graduation, even. Mors de Super, of course, means "Death From Above," which is our more colloquial motto. I recommend watching "Apocalypse Now" before you head off, since we get a few of our traditions from that movie. Learn the words to "Back In Black," as it is our sort of theme song. Our other theme song is "Ride of the Valkyries". We blast these songs from the "Stacks" (ginormous speakers on the 7th floor balcony that we point towards campus) on Friday afternoons and then follow up with other fun music, just as a Friday treat. You can hear the music from anywhere on campus.

Lovetteers think that Sid is their colony, but they're delusional. ;)

Sid throws the Early 80s party and the Tower Party every year. Those are pretty cool. We also do an annual musical.

Kelly Penrod's your college coordinator. She's a goddess. She's also a notary public!

Dr. Dan is one of the RAs. He makes excellent fudge.

Sid Rich is also right across from the new light rail, which is going to really be fun and convenient for all the incoming freshmen.

Hmm... what else? Mattresses are extra-long, so buy the special sheets. You're going to want to get another lamp or something, since it gets kinda dark at night. Loft your beds above your desks because it gives you a TON more room. Hmm... card the door to your suite and lock the door to your room.

I think that's it! Sid Rich Rules! Death From Above!

Amy
SRC '04

WOW! Thanks so much for all of the great info Amy! Great tips! Now D can be ready for when she arrives. Guess she will be renting a movie and maybe downloading a few new songs for the ipod : )

Thank you Amy! It sounds great! I already spoke to Kelly, she's wonderful and gave me so much info already.

Yay! I received my roommate packet from Wiess!

We are not delusional!!!

The sid musical was quite good.

This year you guys should have been disqualified for underfilling! OUCH!
I have no problem with tiki torches, but beer bike was a literally painful experience for me!

80's party was my favorite Rice party last year, though.

Sigh... really? That's quite irritating. I was Beer Bike Security Coordinator three years ago and recommended that if a college is found to have consistently underfilled water balloons for two years in a row, that they be banned from the parade for five years. Obviously, my suggestion wasn't taken!

(I did, however, fine Brown very heavily for underfilling, and from what I hear, they quit doing that. Hopefully Sid Rich will get fined and will quit with the underfilling, too. It's really way not cool. Those suckers can hurt people.)

oh i have another question for amy!! :D it's about CLOSET SIZES!! haha xP
(yess.. we girls need to know this stuff) soooo, i was looking at sid's room layouts, but each room only seems to have one closet. do we share with our roomates? and approximately how big are our closets? thanks!

if lovetteers are delusional for thinking of Sid as their colony, that makes everyone from other colleges delusional for thinking Martel's not a college.

yall are living in the past. get a life

Shann
MC '08

(inserting an 'and only if') And since we all know Martel is not a college, that means Sid rich is our colony. I like your thinking.

Amy -

Sid was heavily fined for their underfilling, luckily.
But I think Sid is really ok other than that. I can empathize with their food issues, and like I said, 80s party and the musical were great!

jenskate, what can you tell me about Hanszen? Im in a double in the old section, and I havent receieved my packet yet, so I just know bits and pieces about Hanszen.......

I really wanted to be in Hanszen, but jym can tell you more about it because that's where her son is. The people are really nice, they have good food, and hallway bathrooms. Mostly doubles in the old section I believe. Don't know much about their traditions, etc.

okay thanks!

Hey - by the way, in May I went on another tour of Rice and my tour guide was a girl named Jennifer from New York - I almost asked her if she was you (jenskate) but she said she was a pre-med major, and I thought I remember you saying you were majoring in something else.....I thought it was funny though...i wonder how often she gets approached by strangers asking her if she uses the CC :D
