i have a dilemna. i'm subletting in an apartment with another guy. the utilities are under his name and so i pay my share by writing a check to him. before i moved in, i asked him how much utilities were per month and he said $50-60 including gas, cable, water, etc. the first month i paid $67 which was fine. now, he tells me the ulitilities are $142 each! he said that he forgot to ask me for last month's cable bill HOWEVER i have a post-it from him saying that the CABLE/gas bill would be $67. i couldn't believe it and i asked to see the bills to discover that the bill should be $100 each, NOT $142. i'm assuming he's adding in the extra $40 for the so called cable bill but i'm pretty sure it was included in last month's utilities. WHAT do i do? i don't want to make it awkward by outwardly accusing him of trying to jip me off and create tension. but at the same tim ei'm afraid he's gonna try to do this again. ANY SUGGESTIONS?

Tell the roommate that you need a copy of the monthly bills for your records and you’ll give him a check for your share after seeing each monthly bill. You should always have your own copies of bills and always record the check number, amount, and date on the bill statement for your own records.

Yeah just ask for a copy of the bills.
