Roommate Process?

So, how do most colleges pick their roommates? I've heard of colleges and universities using questions that ask freshmen whether they stay up late, listen to loud music, etc. Do most colleges and universities ask more personal questions than that, though? And how easy/hard is is to switch roommates if you end up with a roommate that you don't get along with?

It largely depends on the college. Some (most nowadays, I think) allow you to pick your own roommate. Personally, I am living with my best friend since middle school. Other people pick their own roommates by meeting people on the university’s Facebook page or using various online roommate-finder sites.

A lot of people also choose to have a “random” roommate. In this case, the college usually asks a few questions. My university I think asked what time you wake up and go to bed, whether you plan on playing an instrument in your room, whether or not you smoke, and a couple others I can’t remember. There aren’t a lot of questions and they aren’t super in-depth, but most colleges tend to do a good job matching people up.

As to how easy or hard it is to switch roommates, that entirely depends on your college. You’d have to probably talk to your RA, who would try to mediate the problem and try to find a solution that didn’t involve you switching rooms.

Thanks for the reply! This was very helpful.

When it came time for the housing process, at my school you could either choose your roommate or do a random selection. A lot of people met their roommate during orientation at my school. For the random selection they had a questionnaire which did a decent job of matching me with my freshman year roommate. They also paired us with roommates based on major.

As far as switching roommates goes, it varies school to school. At mine we had to fill out a request form. They’d usually were honored fairly quickly too, so I don’t think it was too much of a headache for anyone.

When my DD applied to Penn State there was a. Penn State Class of 20XX Facebook page that students used to meet people prior to attending and to find prospective roommates. Maybe you can check Facebook for your class and college. The classes were listed by college graduation year not high school graduation. Good luck!
