So, I'm getting psyched for next year. I definitely want a roommate, but I'm curious as to how they are paired. If you say something on your preference sheet like "loud techno music and capitalism are the only things important to me in life" (i mean, just an example, of course...) will they try to cater to that or will they try to "open your mind" by pairing you with someone with dissimilar tastes or beliefs?

I don't remember how it was set up, but the selection process worked well for my daughter. She's had the same roommate for her whole time at Olin.

In general, there's usually 3 main questions they ask:
1) Messy or neat
2) Smoker or not
3) Listen to music or not when you study

Surprisingly, with only this information, they have paired up a lot of lifelong friends. They usually won't try and throw you with someone who you likely won't get along with.
