Roommate situation

I went to a tour today and found out that the process of selecting roommates is completely random. (maybe except for choosing smoking/nonsmoking and jewish students). But I also heard that should two students mutually agree to be mates they can be just that.

For the admitted students --- how do you plan to work this process? Just go with a flow or find someone on facebook? I dont use facebook and I may need to find a roommate so I wont have to sniff smoke all day and so I can stay up late!

what do you guys plan to do!?

Fortunately for me I had my cousin room with me because we both got in and he had turned down GWU’s offer of admission. But with the whole facebook thing, the Univeristy recommends for the students NOT to use that as a roommate searching method. People on facebook may not seem to be what you had expected. Not saying that it is always the case but I’m guessing the University has had students who have been shocked to find out that “Kind, super cool, or generous Ben (example name)” was in reality annoying, grouchy and broken-spirited. I really don’t know what necessarily to recommend except just go with the flow. Unless you know someone in your school that got in and you know very well their personality then see if that works.

Yeah, I’m attending Syracuse next year, not so excited about the random roommates idea, I also don’t use Facebook so finding a roommate isn’t going to be the easiest thing. Over at Drexel they have a forum for accepted students so they can just talk and get to know each other, and find roommates if you wanted. Too bad Syracuse doesn’t have something like that setup.

agh I guess I have no choice… House of London, do you know if they do in fact help separate the smokers from non smokers? I guess I’d be okay w/ going with the flow but if my roommate’s a smoker I dont think I could stand living next to him

JamesLee90: You could try to get into the Substance Free Living (or whatever it’s called) dorms. That might get you what you want.

that’s true, but substance free also means no alcohol (technically)–you have to sign a contract. it’ll be in lawrinson next year if you’re interested.

generally, people have more luck with random roommates then they do with facebooking them (or so hearsay tells me); personally, i got along really well with my freshman year roommate. the learning/living communities are a way to ensure that you’ll have similar interests (IR, photography, etc) if that’s super-important to you, but honestly, it’s better not to be best friends with your roommate (otherwise any friend drama follows you home).

technically all the dorms are non-smoking but of course people violate that, so if it’s a huge issue, substance free is a good option, but keep in mind what else you’re giving up.

They let Jewish students pick exclusively Jewish roommates? Never heard of that before. Doubting that is the case. (But if so, do they let Christians pick Christians and Muslims pick Muslims?)

@jipi: I’m pretty sure there’s a Jewish Living or something LLC.

I dont c how facebook is a bad idea. its better than getting a random roomate. Besides, even if it is random, u find out in early august. SO u have a few weeks to like get 2 know the person.

"but if my roommate’s a smoker I dont think I could stand living next to him "

Even if your roommate is a smoker, he/she is not allowed to smoke in the dorm room anyway. It is forbidden and plus, there are smoke detectors in every dorm with sprinklers built in. Once that goes off, say goodybye to all your valuables. So yeah, I doubt your roommate would even want to think about smoking in the dorm room.

“I dont c how facebook is a bad idea. its better than getting a random roomate.”

You’d be more devastated if you selected a roommate based on their presentation on facebook and then find out that they are actually not whom you thought they were. Hopefully it doesn’t happen to you though.
