Does anybody know exactly how random roommates are? Is there some kind of survey that goes more in depth than smoker/nonsmoker, or is that about it? Any insight would be appreciated. (:

A pretty standard roommate survey is used.

You’ll probably find that this is the case at most schools.

Came online May 1st last year, must submit by early June. When it is active you go to:

Last year if I remember correctly there were also questions about your sleeping schedule and level of cleanliness, as well as a few more I can’t recall.

Almost everyone I know here has had good experiences with going random, so I would definitely suggest it!

thanks for that info.^^. Was wondering too. As a current student, how do you view the housing options such as Brown College, etc.? I was reading about all the housing options on the Uva housing site last night and I am just curious. Does there seem to be a particular type of student that prefers the community based housing options, like Brown? Or do all the housing options seem to form their own “commuity” regardless? I’m just trying to hear from your perspective as a current student. We are heading to the first session of DOTL and will make sure to tour the housing options too.

jkiwmom - I have a few friends in Brown College, and it houses a lot of arts students. The application is very unique; creativity is definitely a plus when applying for a room there.

That is exactly what I was hoping! My S is very artsy and “different” (in a good way!). He’ll be dual majoring in fine arts. thanks! Will tell him to check out the Brown app. :)

I have a soft spot for Brownies. There used to be a good number of them on College Confidential. I think Hazel was a Brown resident when she was an undergrad. If you do a search, I know you’ll find threads that have discussed Brown College.

I don’t drink, so my main concern is being matched with a roommate who does. Is this issue covered in the survey?

Dean J, thank you! Brown sounds like my son’s utopia :). Will start searching the threads…

jkiwmom - if you need any other information, feel free to pm me! i’ve stayed in brown, know the layout of the rooms, and have three friends who currently live there.
