Roommates

Some of the other schools I got in to have rooming questionnaires, where they try to match up people with others they feel like they'd get along with. Does anybody know if they have something like this at Duke? If you don't find a roommate yourself do they just match you up completely at random?

There is a questionnaire,

yeah it is based on roommate sleeping/studying/smoking habits
It works pretty well. My random roommate is one of my best friends here.

^I second the above. I had a randomly assigned roommate freshman year and LOVED them.

The questionnaire is pretty basic: do you go to bed and wake up early/late, do you smoke/want a smoking roommate, do you like to study with noise, etc. They match you up surprisingly well…and if you hate your roommate for some reason it’s not too difficult to get a reassignment once you get to Duke.

Hello, admitted student here for class of 2015!

As a West Coast resident, I’m a little bothered by the smoking deal…People smoke inside of dorms? :frowning: Is that common? I saw people smoking on campus, but I thought it was just limited to outdoors.

I’m pretty sure it’s nonsmoking everywhere indoors. The question has more to do with the residual smell that tends to cling to smokers. Of course, some people try to cheat by covering up the smoke detectors, rules be damned, but there’s not much you can do to prevent that.

What other questions are asked? Are there any personality ones or do they all relate to study habits, smoking, cleaning, etc.?

Here’s a survey for a previous year: https://survey.oit.duke.edu//ViewsFlash/servlet/viewsflash?cmd=showform&pollid=springhousing!09RoommateFinder

I don’t know if everyone can look at it so I’ll transcribe the questions as well:
-Name
-Class year
-Gender
-Duke e-mail address
-I am a smoker: Yes/No/Social Smoker
-I mind if my roommate smokes: Yes/No
-I prefer noise when I study: yes/no/don’t care
-I usually go to sleep at:
-I usually wake up at:
-I am a good roommate because:
-I am looking for a roommate who:

This survey is for upperclassmen so those last two questions may not apply to incoming freshmen. Upperclassmen can search through a bunch of these listings and contact people they’re interested in. Freshmen don’t have that luxury and are assigned by the housing office who will try to fit all the criteria listed.

Thank you!!
