Roommates

Soon to be Freshman is starting to stress over the roommate situation. Is it better to try and find your own roommate or just let the random process take over. She is in the Honors College and chose University Honors, so does that limit your roommate "pool" right there? Is it a good idea to try and meet someone at orientation? Thanks!

While I’ve heard that random roommate assignments can work out well, I’m glad I chose my roommate for next year over facebook (if your daughter doesn’t want to wait until orientation, she can check the class of 2016 fb group - a lot of girls in UH are advertising for roommies and your daughter can respond and/or do the same). Talking to someone and figuring out whether or not you’d be a good match to room together is slightly awkward but totally worth it once you choose someone because then you know what you’re getting into. It was good especially for me because I don’t know anyone else coming to UMD next year (coming from OOS) so I like that I at least will have someone there who I’ve talked to before. So yeah in general I think if you want to leave the process up to the school it will probably go fine, but finding a roommate on your own is definitely something to look into.

thanks so much! She got right onto that facebook page and has found a few options already!

I’d say try to find your own roommates. I had bad experiences with the random selection of roommates. I feel that the little questionnaire they make you take isn’t enough to see if two (or three or four) people will get along. I agree that it might be awkward, but be sure to ask your potential roommate questions about the way they live, don’t just base it off of personality. Trust me you will be happier for it. Also when you get on campus, take the roommate agreement seriously.

I am an incoming freshman. My assigned roommate and I took a roommate compatibility assessment at [TTI SURVEY](TTI SURVEY). It really helped me to understand her and we haven’t even met yet.

When/Where did you get your roommate assigned?

@MDdad Room assignments come out at 8:30 am on July 20.

Does the college mail or email roomate assignments?

It’s gonna be like waiting for decisions all over again, so pumped.

Sending out last minute prayers that everyone gets a good roommate!

@Dudleydoright - go to resident life page and sign in to your account tomorrow morning.

I immediately checked the site when I woke up… Only to find that they haven’t assigned me a roommate yet. I have a room, but roommates name says “[vacancy]” and reslife said I just have to keep checking the site every day. -_-

My daughter has a nice roommate. She received notice right at 8:30. They are hitting it off so far. Of course it is easy until you have to live together 24/7.
