Okay, so on the “New Student Checklist” it says roommates would be announced on the 15th of this month, but that hasn’t happened. I was searching around and found that Freshman are supposed to choose roommates and are emailed telling them when they can do so, according to when they submitted their deposits. I haven’t received any email, and I was just wondering how the roommate assignment and room selection process works for transfers. I also haven’t heard anything about my move in date… I wish they kept transfers a little better informed.

I know that they basically tell Transfers nothing…

The third party that the Housing and Dining Office hired to deal with the roommate and housing situation for freshman, had their program crash when freshman started signing up for housing. So expect a little delay in hearing where you’re going to be living.

They have no idea where they’re going to put transfers until they’ve given all the freshman housing. Odds are you’ll go into your my.american portal and see that you’re living on Tenley campus, only to have it change two weeks later once they get the housing sorted out. You also don’t get to have any say in your roommate, or your room, you’ll just one day sign into my.american and see that you have a room, and a roommate.

The residence halls open at 9am on Saturday, August 14th. Of course you can also move in any time after that (but I believe that you also have Welcome Week activities…)

The only caveat I would add to AUTransfer’s response is that we are now guaranteeing housing for enrolling transfer students who are bringing 35 or fewer credits for transfer to the University, so long as your deposit and housing application materials are received by July 1. I just wanted to add this in for future thread viewers.

Thanks for your quick responses… this reminds me of the Army. Hurry up and wait haha

I have 51 credits, but I put in my deposit in early February so I’m hoping I’ll get housing.

We do anticipate having more housing available for transfer students this year than we have had in previous years!

I spoke with some other Fall 2010 transfers, and they all said that they’re looking for off-campus housing since they don’t anticipate getting rooms. I suppose I should start looking too, just in case, but since my housing assignment might come up “any day” I can’t exactly be signing contracts on apartments or anything, so I’m really not sure what to do.

I really hope I can live on campus for my first year…and if I can’t I really hope they let me know soon…I guess ill start looking for apartments just in case :/

^ I’m probably just going to get an apartment. It will cost about as much as a dorm, and it’ll be so much nicer. And then I don’t have to wait for housing and dining to sort everything out.

what areas are you looking in?

FortySixthInft: That’s not a bad idea – and as long as you make an effort to meet people in other ways, you don’t miss out on any social interaction. I dropped out of the Housing and Dining Process because I found an apartment right off of Van Ness metro with my own bedroom and all utilities included for 200/month less than AU housing. And I’m picky about my housing, it needs to be close to metro and I really wanted my own room. For people who are less picky about those things, they can get MUCH better rates than AU even in the most expensive neighborhoods in DC.

The vast majority of students live in Tenleytown, Vanness, Cleveland Park and maybe Bethesda. I know a lot of people though who live in Northern Virginia (Braddock Rd, Alexandria and Arlington) who commute the 30-40 minutes because the housing is just so much cheaper.
