Rooms & Roommates

I have a question about dorm rooms and how to set them up. Do they give you anything (blankets, pillows, lamps, etc.), or are you expected to bring your own stuff? And what furniture do they provide (a desk, bookshelves, etc.)?

Also, is decoration usually an issue with roommates? I have kind of weird tastes, so should I wait to meet my roommate and talk with her about what to hang up before actually buying anything?

I'm sorry if there's already a thread like this, but I haven't found one.

I imagine that every school is a bit different in terms of what items they supply and how large the rooms are.

Delve into the student handbook (or online) to find out more.

I think you should call your roommate in the summer and figure out what you want to do with your dorm. You can both decide which things to bring furniture-wise and how the decorating will go.

Keep in mind the dorms are rather small. I wouldn't expect much stuff to fit in there!!

Wait, I thought that you only know your roommate once you arrive at school?
Do they usually give you their contact info over summer?

I think it varies from school to school.

Call your school, we won't know what happens in every school, they are all different.

ladybug, i'm going to do what you said :)

itsren is right, call the school or better yet, try to get a hold of an actual student

Where did you decide to attend?

Okay, thanks for the advice I just wanted to know what I should do and you guys helped me out :)

Jonathan1 - I think you're talking to me, and the answer is Andover.

oh I'm So excited for all of us!!
:D:):D:):D:)

I don't know about other schools, but at NMH you don't find out who your roommate is until you arrive. The rooms have two beds (which can be bunked) and two desks with chairs. They do supply a set of sheets, pillowcases, and towels. My son has put his aside for "emergency" use only. The sheets are standard, non-fitted, white sheets and the towes are about the size of hand-towels. As a guy, he didn't really care about any "matching" issues with the roommate, but he did have a definite idea of the color-scheme he wanted. He brought his own lamp, clotheshangers, etc.

doesn't andover send out a questionaire for students so they can easily be matched with other students for dorms? by the way, which grade did you get into?

roommate selection forms, which MOST schools have, look like this::
http://files.sitepages.com/misshalls/pdf/roommate.pdf

Andover doesn't give you anything (blankets, towels, etc.), but you can buy them from the school. I recommend getting your own though. You get a desk, chairs, bed, and dresser in your room. I'd wait until you see the room before you buy more furniture. Decoration isn't usually an issue, but it's always better to ask. You'll get your rooming info in late summer, so you can contact your roommate (if you have one).

It would cool if boarding schools did what some colleges do-have a website where each person has their own profile and you can pick your roommate from there.
Although, I guess the current system is more easy and fair.
Just a thought!

Thanks a lot for all the input, you've answered my question really well =) I'm going to Andover for 10th grade, so I'm kinda nervous and I want to be well-prepared...

i know some schools kinda match you up with someone....
but idk how they do that...
im really hoping i get a roommate i like :)

I know it's like an insta-friend!

except for sometimes people dont like their roommate...
i dont even want to get into that...
it would be such a hassle switching rooms lol
