how do rooms work?? Are they selected by colleges??

what rooms?

lol yeah, bnair you were a lil vague on that post

Sorry sorry i meant how do like dorm rooms work??? how are they chosen?

completely random in terms of whom you are put with.

you get a questionaire with some choices like "would you prefer single/double, single sex/coed, and some basic matching things like loud/quiet, early/late riser, can you work eith noise etc.

For the most part you can't pick your building unless you pick a program house like the one for music, or ecology, etc. There's a thread on this somewhere. search dorm rooms in the cornell forum under "advanced search"

who in the world would choose loud for "loud/quiet"

if you're a loud guy, u'd want a quiet roomate. if you're a quiet guy, u'd want a quiet roomate.

no not roommate coices, it's like "do you envision your room as social or studious" that's the actual question.

"loud/quiet" - cant u hav something in between???

There are co-ed rooms?

I think the co-ed question refers to co-ed housing, not co-ed rooms.

You could turn your room into a co-ed room if you got a single...

As far as the "loud/quiet" stuff, I feel like Cornell doesn't pay much attention to housing forms.

Sweet, there's an overzealous mod trolling the waters.

Note to self, I'm no longer allowed to say that a question is "amazingly vague and poorly worded".

at least you go to cornell, perro.....

metallic, people lie on the housing forms all the time to help promote "the new students" they wish to be in college. Also, it's if you envision your room as a "chillin' place" and you go to study in the library or cafe or study lounge versus your room as being a place where you close the door and hit the books and go chill in someone elses room. If you get a single, it IS a bit of both...

lol sparticus, so do you, what was that supposed to mean?

it's just a good thing...haha

sparticus800 or anyone else who would know, is there an option for suites? Like I'd like a single but to still be with other people, so is there anyway to get some sort of suite arrangement?

Also, what about program houses? Can you choose if you want to be in one your freshman year?

And if you know anything about Risley or JAM, wanna share?

There are suite-style arrangements in the high rises, and the townhouses give a good opportunity to live with other people. But chances of getting the dorm you want are pretty slim anyhow. Program houses can be applied to and lived in freshman year. Theres a separate application for them. I know a couple kids who live in JAM. As you might suspect, they are very into their music. If music is really important to you, JAM might be a cool opportunity. As for risley, its considered pretty weird by most people. The folks who live there are quite interesting. I mean, it seems to me to be mostly the stereotypical "acting kids" from high school. So if you were one of those, I guess you might like Risley.

I've heard that Risley can be a bit...intense, hehe. But like, lets say I generally get along with any of the kids who would fall under the label punk/goth/hippy/stoner, etc, who generally go to crazy underground shows with crazy pierced up people, would Risley be all right? Also, like in terms of pot smoking and all that, is there perhaps more of it in Risley than elsewhere? Like would I more likely find a fun stoner crowd of people who aren't afraid to be all different and weird and jump on things?

As for JAM, would that at all be more like a less intense form of Risley? A sorta-friend of mine (she's the daughter of family friends) at Cornell was a bit taken aback when I said I was thinking about Risley, and she said that it might be too "intense" as a freshman. I'm into music, though not like crazy into it. I play the piano and I do love playing it, but it's not like my whole life. Would I find some cool, laid back hippy stoner crowd at JAM, or would they be like intense celloists? Not that I have anything against intense celloists.

Also, this girl recommended something I think called Dickinson (?) to me. Know anything about that?

Thank you guys so much!

risley sounds like the theater kid dorm. we all know what theater kids are like. it should be self-explanatory.

I actually have no idea what theater kids are like, lol. I go to a tiny private school and there's no theater program here, so I've never encountered most of the traditional sorta cliques. Are theater kids like the kids that I just described?
