Does anyone know what it feels like when you need a root canal and what it feels like to have the operation done?

I have a filled cavity in one tooth and the gum above it has been sore for about a week. my tooth doesn't hurt at all
i was wondering if i have need a root canal?

i’ve had something close to a root canal, in terms of pain. maybe your gum is decaying now because you’ve had the cavity for so long? that’s how it was for me when I was a kid and welllllll it was painful. like stab-me-with-a-knife painful. but then again i was younger so maybe i was more sensitive to pain. =/

or it might be because you’ve had the cavity itself put on your tooth? Maybe that irritated the gum or something haha XD

I had a root canal when i was 10…It was actually very soothing. They give you a ton of that numbing stuff beforehand so you can’t feel anything.
That doesn’t really sound like you need a root canal though. The reason I needed a root canal was because my filling fell out and I left it for months. Also, whenever I bit down I would feel this excruciating pain start from where the tooth was then go to the rest of my whole face. It felt kind of like I was getting hit in the face with a steel bar…:)

I got one done a few months ago.
It doesn’t hurt at all while you’re getting it done. It’s a LITTLE sore the next day, but it doesn’t interfere with anything.

The only thing that is a pain in the butt is that it takes a long time. Like you have to go, get it evaluated, then go back a few times for check ups and stuff. Plus, you get a fake tooth for a while that is metal and that’s kind of awkward.

I got four of them a couple months ago (two at a time)…it isn’t really painful at all, just uncomfortable. The first time apparently he didn’t put enough freeze stuff in and then proceeded to drill into my tooth, that kinda killed. Other than that it was all gravy. Compared to getting smashed in the face with a hockey stick and having your teeth go through your lip and open nerves chillin in your mouth, it was like a wagon ride in the park.

^^ I’ve heard that too. I always think of that saying of “I’d rather get a root canal than __________.” So I always assumed it was extremely painful. My mother has had one and she said it wasn’t painful too.

My health teacher said it was painful. Don’t they have to remove your tooth, then suck out all that goo, then replace it with a fake tooth. As long as you don’t feel anything, I think it’s no big deal.
