Rory McIlroy

Rory could have gone through with the wedding, then cheated on her (like Tiger). Not the classiest to break up with her over the phone, but I actually think it takes a lot of courage to walk away after the invitations have been sent if you know it isn’t the right thing to do.

Ending a relationship after just having sent out the invitations isn’t the best way to handle things, and to do it over the phone is cowardly and insensitive. He may be a perfectly nice person in other aspects of his life but he treated the woman he had loved for several years in a very poor way. Caroline shouldn’t have been too surprised, though, because he dumped his previous longtime girlfriend for her.

I’m not a big fan of Tiger either but he’s one of the greatest golfers of all time and will likely play well again. His personal life was a mess but seems to be going well now. If Elin can forgive him enough to spend time together with their respective significant others as they apparently do, who am I to judge.

He could have done it in person - if they were even on the same continent that day! When two people like that are dating, scheduling becomes a real problem. He’s 25, cut him some slack. I think he wanted to get the word out quickly, contacted her and they issued a joint statement cancelling their wedding.

And besides, I’d like him to marry one of my girls.

I like Phil a lot. He was loving and caring to his wife while she went through cancer.

and Phil is a great supporter of math and science education, and has started a teacher sponsorship fund…
Nice Guy.

25 is old enough (for McIlroy) to figure out how to break off an engagement with sensitivity to his fiancee. If he was on another continent, he could have used the phone to speak, not text. Certainly he could have determined he was not ready to be married before the invitations were sent, or perhaps (!) before he proposed.

His actions indicate a lack of maturity and weak character.

Rory does it again …fantastic job!

What an amazing match! Rory was fantastic.

I knew nothing of Rory’s personal life before reading about the way in which he broke things off with his fiance, but there’s just something about that boy that I love. Besides, Phil, he’s my favorite pro golfer. Tiger (sigh…) really disappointed me, but I’ve always been impressed by his sheer talent. No matter what, he’ll go down as one of the best that’s ever played the game. It was always really exciting watching him play his A-game, and I hope he can provide us with more examples of golf brilliance before his injuries sideline him for good. My favorite golfer of all time, besides Nicolas, was Payne Stewart. A good man, and excellent pro who went way too soon… =((

Good PGA today.

I don’t care how McIlroy broke up with his ex girlfriend, at 25 he was wise to do so. I’d go with lack of maturity which is consistent with his age but no way is that a "weak character! A strong character to call it off before it was too late. So much easier for her than needing to go through a divorce and any ramifications for any future marriage. So much classier than Tiger Woods’ behaviors, whose career seems mainly history now as well.

These guys are pros, but the composure that McIlroy showed in the final six or seven holes was extremely good. So many times athletes succumb to the pressure to “make something happen” when things get tight and competition is intense. McIlroy stuck to his very high quality game, stayed under control, and ultimately won because his game was just a bit better than everyone else’s. Hat’s off.

I was rooting for Rickie Fowler but had to admire the way McIlroy kept plugging away yesterday even when he was struggling and being challenged by so many others. Good for him. I, too, hope that Tiger will be back at some point playing like he did before. I have to wonder if he came back from that surgery too quickly. It took Graham DeLaet ten months before he was ready to play again and he’s a lot younger than Tiger.

McIlroy’s been playing like a man possessed since cutting loose the ball and chain. He is on an epic run right now.
