Rose Hill Honors?

Hey everyone! I was just invited to join the Fordham Honors Program at Rose Hill and I was wondering if anyone had any first-hand knowledge about it? I'm extremely grateful to be given this opportunity but I want to make sure the honors program is just not compose of required difficult classes. So, if anyone knows anything, I would really appreciate it! :)

The Rose Hill Honors program is a special academic experience very unique to Fordham. Admission to the program is competitive; a group of honors faculty holistically review Fordham’s top applicants to select each year’s participants. Many honors students turned down some of the nation’s best universities for the Fordham’s honors program.

Only 35 students are in each grade, making the program a very tight-knit community. As part of this community, all honors students are granted 24-hour access to “Alpha House,” a small building in the middle of campus, to study, hang out, and have class (no one lives here, though - honors students who live on campus reside with the general student population, making it easy to meet people outside of honors).

All honors students have an alternative core curriculum. During freshman and sophomore years, each student takes 3 or 4 honors classes per semester. Everyone takes 1 honors class a semester during Junior year and an honors thesis seminar during senior year.

Fordham’s very best professors teach these classes and there’s only 10-15 students in each class. The small class size encourages discussion and promotes relationships between students and professors.

The curriculum is unique; it is a survey of Western thought, from ancient times to the modern day. Here is a link that describes the honors curriculum: Courses[/url”>http://www.fordham.edu/academics/special_programs/honors_program_fordh/curriculum_overview/courses_26531.asp]Courses. Depending on your AP credits, you may be exempt from some of these classes (specifically, the math and science requirements). Like many professors at Fordham, the honors faculty frequently organizes trips to broadway, museums, the opera, and other cultural destinations that complement the curriculum.

Finally, there a many honors social events throughout the year, such as a barbeque, holiday party, excursions into Manhattan, and an end-of-the-year banquet.

I have truly loved my honors experience and I’m so thankful Fordham offered me the opportunity to participate in the program. None of the other schools I was considering had a program comparable to this (even the well-known Schreyer Honors College at Penn State couldn’t compare, in my opinion). And, for the most part, not even the Ivy leagues or other top schools offer this kind of personal attention to undergraduates.

Thank you so much!! It sounds amazing, so you may have sold me on Fordham a tiny bit more. :)

Can one still enjoy the Honors Program while still going on a pre-med track? I’m worried I’ll feel too overwhelmed or not have enough time to schedule in all my courses.

There are pre-med students in honors. Scheduling is a little more difficult because of the additional required classes, but it’s definitely doable. I know my one friend is so thankful to be in fordham honors as a pre-med student because the program provides a solid liberal arts foundation she probably wouldn’t have gotten had she studied pre-med elsewhere.

Can anybody give me information about the LC honors program? I got almost a full ride to another well known Jesuit school, and I was wondering if anybody thought it worth it to take out loans to do Fordham Honors as opposed to the other school.

^^^Congratulations on your acceptance to LC Honors! Sorry I don’t have any experience with the Honors program, my S is not in it, but I DO have experience paying back student loans and so I think that the answer as to whether Fordham will be worth it really depends on how much in loans, your post grad plans, whether you like the other school and it is a good fit for you. These all have to be considered in your decision. Good luck! :)

I’m waiting to hear back about my request for reconsideration of financial aid, so hopefully that goes well- I do want to go to grad school, so I’d definitely only stick to federal loans- whether or not that is possible will depend on what they give me! I love Fordham, it’s my first choice, but I love the other school as well. At this point it’s just a waiting game… Thank you for the advice!
