Rose-Hulman high acceptance rate

Everywhere I look, I find statistics that say Rose-Hulman institute of technology has an acceptance rate of ruffly 70%. This came as a shock, especially since the average ACT/SAT scores were so high. How does this happen? I read about 3k apply, 2k are accepted, and then 500 enroll. I'm just baffeled as to how this school can have such a high acceptance rates, but such great student stat averages. If my average is barely below the average of enrolled students, should I be really worried, or is the high acceptance rate, and "easy" admissions going to make it no problem?

Those who apply are very self selective. But RH has a wonderful placement record and is very highly regarded. I declined an offer to go to an HYP college.

I’m assuming if you show a lot of interest in the school, you would have a better chance…their yield is pretty low.

Because think about it, the only people who apply to rose are kids who want to be an engineer or math major of some sort. Most kids who have desires like that are pretty smart. But don’t let that high acceptance rate worry you, it’s an AMAZING school. My friends dad own some biomedical engineering company and he says they hire pretty much any Rose graduate.

I was more concerned with the fact that in their “freshman profile”, they have ridiculous stats, like 44 (out of roughly 500 freshman) earned a perfect 800 on the math section of the SAT. I am far from that. The average math is a 690, I have about a 600. I worry that since I’m below average, I would have a hard time getting in, but then I see their acceptance rate, and see that it doesn’t look like acceptance is to tough.

Are you a girl or a boy?

Both my father and grandfather were Rose EE’s. I’m the HR director of an Engineering company. We LOVE Rose grads. Very tough school, very nice kids, LOTS of personal staff attention. Their career placement staff is awesome. We wanted a coop student at the last minute and Rose had someone perfect for us in a couple of weeks. That small school responsiveness is a huge asset.

I’m a boy. I’m also doing something called the Tennessee governor’s school this summer. its a 1 month program run out of the university of Tennessee, and I will get 8 college credits from its focus on engineering. Obviously something like this is helpful to an application, but would enrolling in Rose-Hulman’s “Operation Catapult” 2 and a half week summer program help my chances there? Do they look favorably upon students who attended that over other summer programs?

I don’t think Catapult will help you that much, though it is a great summer program. Just be able to show the school interest with a visit and interview, and try to supplement your Math SAT score with high SATII scores and great recommendations. It is a school that can look beyond the numbers but you need to be within reason. Are you a jr? Is there time to take the SAT again in order to get your numbers up? Coming from outside the Midwest may be a plus for you.

Yes, I am a junior. I will be taking the SAT again. It says they take either the SAT or the ACT. I have much better ACT scores. 30 composite. Would it be a bad idea to only send in ACT? Should I send in both, even if my SAT is fairly poor?

if 2000 out of 3000 get accepted, that is 2/3 of the applicants. 2/3 ~ 70%

What was your math score on the ACT? I think that a 30 is better for you as long as the math score is at or near 30 or higher. There is no need to bother with the SAT. At Rose, math counts. This school has a very self-selecting pool of applicants, and it is still very competitive. Things like cost also discourage applicants, since it is not known for high merit aid. Since you are only a jr, work hard on your test scores.

risubu, don’t kid yourself. Not nearly as many kids choose to go to a rigorous engineering school in Terre Haute, Indiana as to other more interesting locations. They have a very talented applicant pool, a very rigorous curriculum and one of the most personal learning experiences available anywhere. It is a real gem.

^wow sorry i didn’t know that! i feel really incompetent now so i’ll leave you engineers alone… :X

This place is getting intense. But one of my friends did the summer program at Rose and loved it so I would highly recommend that. I feel like if you complete that program while doing decently you should be a shoe in for getting accepted.

I also hear GPA and class rank are the 2 most important factors. I hear they do not care as much about standardized tests. so the fact that I have an upga of 3.8 and a wgpa of a 4.18, and am in the top quarter, maybe top 10% of my class, I’m looking good?
