My son has a possibility of getting into HMC/Olin/CalTech for fall 2010, maybe, based on ECs, stats, and the phases of the moon. Has anyone rejected one of these schools for Rose? If so, why? Are you happy with that decision?

He's CS/Math, planning on PhD thereafter. His best sport would be IM Sidewalk-tripping, and he would be ineliglble for any ROTC. Wherever he goes, he will likely end up with loans.

Thanks!

You can PM me, my daughter goes to Rose and gave up a few great schools. But she says she made the best decision going to Rose.

My daughter goes to Rose and simply love it. It is a wonderful school and I have many example from a parent's standpoint.

For example, when whe first started there, she had tested out of Chem 1st year. Ahhh, we as parents knew this might be a bad move if she went into the second year right from the being. So she said she would try it for a week and see how it went. Well, day 2 and shes into the Professor office asking him to sign off to go down to Chem 1.

He talked to her for an hours and said.....you know what if you come into my class 2 hours 2x per week, I will tutor you. Guess what she passed the class with flying colors and true to his word he did tutor her through the class.

This is not the first example: this is her second year and all students work with their professors.

And I have to say if the prof is not willing to take the time.....out the door they will be. The school expects the profs to work with the students. Not only that the profs love doing it. There is a lot of support there. Study groups and even a Soph dorm with 2 tutors per floor that are available at all times.

My D is in a soriety and also president of a club......she could have never done this at another school.

Rose cares about the students and will ensure success. I have even spoke to the President of the school a couple times during Parents day, also my D has spoke to him. Its amazing to know a school so caring as this one.

Also, the career center is amazing my D had a internship her 1st year. Again, just a great place from a students point of view and a parents POV.

Let me know if you have other questions.

GeekMom,
S is a math/CS guy and we looked at HMC, Olin and Caltech, among others. Olin offers engineering only. It is possible to major in math, but would require going off campus to do so, and one still must complete all the engineering requirements at Olin. (Michael Moody, who is the Dean, used to be a math prof at Mudd.)

Rose is a bit more forgiving of test scores and grades, but they do a fabulous job of turning out great engineers. The only complaint I've heard about Rose is the location. Everything I've read from other students and parents has been positive.
