The official thread for OSU's Ross Program in 2011.

i’m applying

I’m planning on applying, too. Anyone know when the application is going to be up?

the site claims some time in January, idk when, and I heard that they will be downsizing on the amount of kids accepted, to only accept the quality kids… meaning the kids that just wasted time working out last year,

anyone know about the qualifications of the instructors??

The instructors are professors either at OSU or nearby colleges.

The application is on their website now

Yes!!! Many famous problems here, so will have to be ultra competitive and show multiple reasons and interesting side conjectures to supplement these problems,

Has anyone completed their application yet?

No, I did my quiz though, and am going to finish it up soon, :D

I’m nervous in regards to my application. I’m going to be a young rising sophomore, and got some sort of solution to 7 of the problems, but no luck on one of them. I feel like everyone else is older than I who’s applying. In addition, I’m only in A2, not even precal.

lol, that’s fine, your math course means nothing because number theory is so different from anything you learned in school. I’d recommend researching pigeonhole for one of the problems, :)

Can someone rephrase the area problem, please? I don’t understand the problem.

You should work on the problems individually. If you need clarification on the problems email the Ross program at ross @ math.ohio-state.edu (no spaces in the actual email)

EDIT: Also while number theory is very different from the math you have probably taken in school, expience with proofs although not strictly neccesary is very helpful.

I’ve been accepted to Ross Program 2011!
I sent in my application earlier this week and I just received my acceptance email!
I think it really helped that I applied early as so many people advised.
Has anybody else applied and has anybody else heard back yet?

sjet10: congratulations! I haven’t submitted my application yet. Are you an international?

ConcreteVitamin:
I don’t know… Is there a place to indicate if I’m an international or not?
And thank you!

sjet10, I suppose people living outside of U.S. are considered as internationals.

ConcreteVitamin, if this helps, I am a international, who goes to school in the states… I think I put my permanent address as my home address (which is outside of us) and school address as one in the us.

sjet10, if you don’t mind:

(1) Do you only include complete, rigorous solutions to the problems, or also include the process of tackling those?
(2) How much attention do you pay on the recommendation and essay questions?

Thanks!

… and (3) Do you include multiple ways in the solutions?
