Ross Decisions.. what was wrong?

I thought I had a great chance at Ross..
Decisions came out today and what the heck.. REJECT!

I can't figure out what really went wrong..

I'm a Michigan resident, admitted at the School of Engineering, and here are some stats:
4.0 unweighted GPA
2300 on SAT I
All 800's on 4 SAT II's
5's on 6 AP's
Many great extracurricular activities
Lots of awards from the Business Professionals of America (I'm an officer too)
Work experience at a government agency
600 hours of volunteer service
Great recommendations

My essays were decent, I thought. I had a teacher and a professional looking over them..

Seriously..... :(

wow those are some very good stats.
but...
Ross is very selective.
and i'm sure you prolly made the first few cuts. it just tells you how competitive admission has become.

What are you planning on doing now?

There must have been more qualified candidates than they could accept. Perhaps your high school is not A rated and others' were? Wow. Your have every reason to wonder what happened--perhaps you could call and talk to someone in admissions about where your application was lacking and, if it then seems appropriate, inquire about an appeals process.

Ouch. You definitely deserved to get in.

I still find it hard to believe.....

No, my high school is actually in Ann Arbor, MI (same as U-M) and it was recently ranked #1 in Michigan by Businessweek.

I am going to call the admissions office, but it's past their office hours and weekend so I would have to wait until Monday.

If nothing works out, I would have to wait from other schools until late March/early April.

why dont you just reapply as a sophomore? mich is still a great school even if you didnt get into ross.

I'm sure with your backround you'll be a great student and will get admitted in your sophomore year. Best of luck! :-)

dude i feel you
i got rejected too when i felt i should had got in
after, getting in everywhere i applied, this is my first and only rejection.
at least i know what it feels like.

how did you guys find out? did they e-mail you? or did it say something on wolverine access?

From what I've read, they'll email you. I haven't gotten anything yet, though.

i havent put in my deposit to umich yet, would that effect my ross decision? Because i did not pay my deposit yet, i dont have a umich email, will they send my decision to my regular email? Do you know how often they send out decisions?

ihatesats2, where have you gotten in so far?

class2009, yea, they sent decisions to my regular email yesterday. I don't know how often they send out. I applied in mid-October.

rjkofnovi, thanks! But it just upsets me and worries me because I am still waiting for 9 other college decisions and they are all top-notch (all in top 20). I feel as though I am not going to get in anywhere now... :(

sunkyujacob,

I feel for you too. You have very impressive stats. You certainly deserved to get in, but they seemed like they were brutal with admissions this year.

Oh well.

Don't feel that way sunkyujacob. You have to remember that Ross is not a particularly large business school. I know that Wharton has a lot more students than Ross for example. I'm sure with your stats you'll get accepted to quite a few top 20 schools. You just have to determine which one is the right one for you.

well the two major schools i got in were Georgetown and nyu stern
i ed'd to stern because i want to study in finance so ya

so since i ed'd at stern that was my only rejection....

other colleges that i applied to that were rolling and i got in are:
university of illinois bloomingfield
university of maryland
and obv university of michigan

so ya...this decision doesnt really matter to me since im going to sterns but i still felt i should of got in (i felt my business essay for ross was really good-i talked about Elephant and the Dragon which was written by a UMich graduate.)

sunkujacob, Ross is almost as selective as Wharton. And since Ross is one of the top 3 or 4 BBA programs in the nation (not quite as awesome as Wharton, but probably #2 or #3 in the nation), one can expect pretty stiff competition. As it turns out, the preadmit rate is under 20% and the average admitted students has a 3.9-4.0 unweighed GPA and a 2000-2400 SAT score. In other words, statistically speaking, you would be a typical preadmit. That does not mean you aren't qualified, but rather, that the majority of preadmits are as qualified and there are very limited spaces. By no means does that make Ross a safety and yet, you are acting like you were a guaranteed preadmit.

You can definitely contact the school to see why you were turned down, but in all likelyhood, you are going to get a very vague answer since getting into such a program is a crap-shoot in the first place. If you really love Michigan (there aren't many colleges that offer the kind of college experience that Michigan affords its undergraduate students), go to Michigan, do well your first year and reapply to Ross at the end of your Freshman year.

Ross isn't all about grades and stats, though--the essays are really important. Yours might have been good but not enough to make the cut.

@sunkyujacob: Leadership and entrepreneurship experience is more important than stats for Ross. If you have good stats, you'll get past the screening process, but you need to show concrete interest in business through entrepreneurship or leadership.

That, IMO, is why you didn't get in. Although, you didn't list your EC's so I can't be sure.

They don't necessarily require entrepreneurship or leadership -- it obviously helps but it's not a prerequisite for acceptance. I got in for pre-admit without either. You just need to prove that you have a passion for business (or something more specific within that realm) through your EC's and essay.

Don't sweat it though. Ross pre-admit is a crapshoot, like it is with most selective programs. You will probably still get in to multiple top 20 colleges.
