Ross or Kelley (IU)?

I was recently accepted to UM off of the wait-list. Currently I am enrolled at IU as a direct admit to the Kelley School of Business and I'm also a member of the Honors College.

I would plan to apply for Ross after my freshman year at Michigan and I would say I have a good chance to get in (I think that the wait-list result was because I applied pretty late).

Michigan was my number one choice this spring after I was wait-listed to Wharton and I still think that I would love Ann Arbor. But I live in Indiana so I have the in-state costs at IU and the out-of-state at UM...plus some scholarships at IU such that IU is practically nothing to attend.

Should I go away from a very inexpensive Kelley degree plus the Honors College and go to UM? This would mean I take the risk I don't get into Ross, plus I burden myself with ridiculous out-of-state costs. IU was my 4th or 5th choice in the spring and it would be really hard to turn down Michigan...I really want to go there. But at the same time I think I would enjoy IU and it would be a great experience there too...I have no reason to believe I would be miserable in Bloomington.

Thanks for all your help!

Depends on how much you like UofM and also how important finances are to you. If you think IU would be a great experience, i would probably stay put. I don’t think its worth the extra tens of thousands of dollars. However, if you do have the money available and you know you like the michigan atmosphere, michigan would definitely be a good investment.

How much more expensive is Michigan per year? Would you have to take loans? Would going there stretch your family budget a lot?

I know Michigan seems very hard to turn down, but I think IU Kelley + Honors college + instate tuition + scholarships sounds like a very very good deal. I think you should save the money.

I agree with MightyNick. I assume there would be close to a $35,000-$40,000/year difference in attendance between IU and Michigan. IU is a solid **** university and Kelley is one of the top 10-15 BBA programs in the country. No university, including Michigan, is worth $140,000-$160,000 more than Kelley. Of course, if your folks are very well off and you can afford the cost difference without breaking a sweat, go for it. Otherwise, I recommend you go to Kelley.

I was in the same situation, except I was in-state at Michigan and a Direct Admit to Kelley. In addition, I have Michigan Educational Trust which covers all tuition at Michigan. When it came down to it, I loved Kelley, but I didn’t have the financial backing to support an OOS tuition that IU had. Kelley is a good B School, so stay in Indiana if Michigan is too much.

^^^^Yours was a no brainer of course. Let’s face he truth, Kelley is good, Ross is better.
